Things to do with a toddler in 43 C heat?

    Hi All,

Looking for some ideas of things to do with a 2.5yo DS today in Melbourne in 43 C heat???? I am 8.5 months pregnant with bubby #2 so this also limits my activities!!!! Want to stay cool but do something fun? I know the local pool will be mayhem!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

can you sit him in the shower/bath with a spray bottle , ie the one you use to squirt water on the ironing/plants -let him water the walls and himself

Stay home in the air con......

Play bubbles, do painting, play in the bath (fill it up with alittle water and let bubs play in it (DD loves laying on her tummy and splashing) playdough,

If that isnt an option, maybego to the library and get some books and read with your toddler in the AC at the library.

Shopping centres have AC and i think they'll be packed with people avoiding the heat.

Pools definatley packed. Beach i wouldnt go in this heat (but thats just me)

Fill a basin with water, plonk it in the middle of the kitchen floor (in the aircon) and add various kitchen implements, sieve, cups, ladles, etc. You will need to mop up (and supervise of course!) but this water play will keep your little one entertained for ages!

Otherwise - think about places like the library, the museum, local play centres - they're all airconditioned!!

I would suggest somewhere airconditioned, but somewhere you are unlikely to end up with a frustrated toddler. Therefore, I would rule out shopping centers etc as I imagine 2.5year olds can become pretty frustrated with shopping pretty quickly plus you would have to be on your feet!

If you really have to get out of the house, what about the aquarium or museum? Although I would avoid anywhere that parking is difficult or where you might have to walk from the car to the venue in the outside heat for both your benefit and your toddler! Also, sometimes the car can take ages to cool down with Air con in this heat so I would stay home if it is an option.

For staying in, would do the bath/bathroom thing as suggested. Water play is the order of the day today I think!! How about fill the bath 1/4 full to play with, jumping in and out all day. Other water ideas:
    • old paint brushes pastry brushes can be used to paint the tiles of the bathroom with water
    • fill up empty containers, jars etc with different amounts of water to make musical instruments which have different tones when donged with a spoon
    • make cubby houses using damp sheets or towels, imagine how cool it would be under a damp cubby with a fan on!
    • Have a tea party in the bath with some waterproof toys, pouring "tea" from the teapot can be extended to showering from the teapot

I'm now off to make myself a cool cubby

I've been filling up a baby bath with a little bit of water, and putting it on the kitchen floor on top of a towel (so I dont make puddles and slip over later on) and then I give Claire some some plastic cups, funnells etc and she just pours water in and out of the cups and funnels. She loves it!

Or I also just put cool water in the bath and she splashes around.

I've also gone to the library to take advantage of their air con, lol!
