I gave Aiden a pillow when he was about 16months. I started to notice that he wasnt sleeping well in his cot at night, but, put him in bed with us, even after we got up in the mornings and left him there, he would sleep alot sounder with a pillow. He used to be a bum in the air sleeper, but, give him a pillow, and he's flat out on his back, or, on his side.
So, i prefer flat pillows, so, i gave him one out of my bed, my scent etc, and since then, his cot sleeping his improved heaps. He sleeps 12hours straight now. I introduced it for his day nap, so i could just keep abit of an eye on it, as even at this age, i was still concerned abit giving a pillow, but, he is great with it.
I gave DS one at about 14 months I think? We partly co sleep and I was noticing that he wriggling up onto our pillows. And in his cot he would use a toy as a pillow! So I just went out and bought him one. He actually does sleep better with a pillow, but he was definitely ready, and letting us know!
As for the cot.......I'm a big advocate of leaving them in there for as long as possible But my DS is out to prove me wrong We're about to get him a bed, as he's such a cot hater, and sleeps so much better on a bed. But seriously, you will know when she's ready.
Janie, our DD co-slept with us from birth. Around 6 weeks ago now, we went and bought a toddler bed from Babyco. She loves it and I can't believe she sleeps in it through day and night now. It's quite funny how she just went straight in the toddler bed. She never went in a cot, hated it!
So....I hope the transition is as easy for you as it was for our DD!
Sounds like bringing in the pillow now is a good idea. No harm in trying I guess.
Will go out and get one this weekend, might give it to him for xmas present.. haha.. add it to his presents under the tree.
With the bed thing, I will hold out as long as possible because I think DS will get up and walk around the house and come into our room in the middle of the night. Might wait till he is nearly three before buying him a bed.
My DS is only 7 months, so doesnt have a pillow yet...but I just wanted to post an idea that I had from reading this thread.
I am going to buy a flat baby pillow before he needs it and put it in my bed so that when DS is ready for a pillow it will have my scent, maybe will help him sleep better in his cot as he gets a big bigger, he is not sleeping through yet and we co-sleep most the night.
