Sleep with a toy and use a pillow? I'd really like to start letting dd sleep with a toy but I dont know when its ok to start that. She is 6 months. Also, when is itok to let bub's use pillows? I'm not looking to start that yrt but just interested to know.
i think it would be ok for her to sleep with a toy , just use commonsense as to how fluffy/big it is .. but from 6 months i think its fine ..
but i wouldnt give them a pillow till they are over 1 or in a big bed .. they dont really need it ... having said that ds had a pillow from 10months ( nughty i know but he wouldnt sleep with out one ... ) and we had no problems .... the risk of sids falls after 6 months ...
If you're worried about toys, why not go for a small piece of muslin or a little blanket or something? The best toys are the easily replaced ones.
The sids risk does drop at 6 months, but continues until they are 4. Yes, really! There was a case last year in NSW of a 6 year old.
Personally, I don't think they need a pillow until 3 or even later. But you can make it a special thing if you want to. I know 2 year olds that have them and love them, and I know a little one who didn't get one until she was nearly 4.
Thanks. I thought a toy would be ok now but wasn't planning on introducing a pillow until 12 months at least anyway. I don't mind her using a small pillow under supervision. I've been thining about putting a few small toys in her cot with her so she can play when she wakes up, that way hopefully she wont wake us up too early.
Mine have had pillows since 6mths old, but they were full size adult ones that were quite flat, and went the width of the cot, so there was no risk of them getting wedged down beside them. I don't have a problem with giving the pillows so young - especially with my youngest who has reflux and being elevated helped him immensely at night.
aiden has a toy bunny that he has slept with from about 7months i guess. no pillow yet, and, i dont see any reason why i should introduce one yet. he seems very comfy.
I dont put any other toys in his cot, for the simple reason that he runs them along the bars of the cot, and it make a 'ell of a racket at 2am!
I have a music box on the side of Ryans cot and a panda that dangles on the side, it's one of those ones you can attach to a pram so they don't lose them. He wakes up in the morning and turns on his music box and plays with his panda. I also had one of those sid safe pillows shoved down the front of his cot because he'd bash his head on the top of the cot and he never had any issues but it also wasn't really fat enough that he could not get more than his forehead on it and now he doesnt need it. He sleeps on a pillow next to me when he has his day naps in our bed but im always cuddling him and right next to him. He likes to suck on my pillows frills lol
Jesse sleeps on the pillows when in our bed too, but for some reason I feel its safer. Its either through the day when I'm always checking on him, or with me, so I feel ok about it.
I do have 2 or 3 little stuffed toys in the cot. He sometimes will play with them to sleep & often when he wakes up too.
We gave Claire a pillow a few months ago. Its pretty flat and not very fluffy. She loves her pillow! She has had a toy in her bed for ages. It doesnt matter what toy she has, just as long as she has something to hold she is happy.
I could get the "bad mummy award" here but... from about birth.
If he was in bed with me, I need a pillow. Also he had toys hanging from his cot and they'd fall off, quite often pulled off by 4m old. Yes, they were small but still there. And his favourite bunny from 1m old. He has a pillow in his bed now, he doesn't use it but if I jump in there I do.
DD started using a pillow when she went into the big bed, she was 2. I thought I had read something somewhere that said babies dont need a pillow till they are 2 so i just never bothered before.
As for the toys, she was a bit older when she started wanting them, maybe about 10-12 months. It would have been a soft toy or her bubba- soft body hard head and we would take them out of the cot before we went to bed.
DS has slept with his teddy since from about 5 months old. He still sleeps with it as it is his comforter. Which i gladly accept him having because he doesnt have a dummy. The only problem was that teddy only just got it's first wash on Sunday lol. Poor DS had a hard time handling being away from his teddy for more than a few hours.
He sometimes has a pillow but i dont think he likes it cause its always on the floor in the mornings. DD hada pillow from about age 2.5.
Tiana slept with us pretty much allthe time since she was born, and when we could get her to sleep in her bed she wouldn't without a pillow. I checked on her so much as I was worried but it was the only way she would sleep! She has just turned 2 and loves her pillow still. You can buy Tontine Junior Pillows from kmart or Big W for about $10. They are designed for little people.
With the toys I would think now would be fine as long as it isnt too big.
