Accidental homebirth?

Just wanted to know what happens if you have an OB and are planning to have bubs in hospital( with no intervention) But you end up having it at home cause you dont make it!

Do you still have to go to hospital or can you just stay home? I would gather you would be in contact with the hospital and they would possible ring an ambulance who would take you in?

As a midwife when this has happened it has being very diffficult for the women to get their paperwork for medicare and birth certificates as no one wants to sign them. Legally the hospital can not sign them. The women that have given birth at home have also being brought into the maternity ward and had a normal hospital stay like you would if you birthed in hospital. If you have an independant midwife then its different you would stay at home. I don't know how you would go if you birthed at home and presented days or hours later. I imagine the papaer work side of things for your baby bonus and birth certificate would be challenging to get. You certainly would get it I am just not sure how.

Oh I think you could just call an ambulance and they would take you to the hospital which could be a different one to the one you book into if your in a large area like Sydney.

Boomba you could check with Nelle she had a speedy unplanned homebirth with her DS2 and her DH caught bubs.

My sister has had 3 accidental homebirths - premiate labours. All they did was call an ambulance and it took them to the local. Its pretty much done "lotus" then so there is no mistaking who had the baby and about when. My other sister whose had an incar birth was the same. The hospital took care of everything. But if you hold off then it will probably cause problems.

Heya CM. There's probably a few of us, I know of myself and Pink Palace, but I know that from my church there were 3 of us who had unplanned homebirths over just a few months! What can you do?

I suppose you could stay home if you wanted. Not sure how that works with birth certificates. But you might want to go in to get bub checked over, and to make sure you haven't torn and are healthy.

In my case, bub was born before the ambulance got there, and it took me to the hospital with no worries, I was admitted and looked after (I'd haemorrhaged again), and as far as I know there was no trouble with the birth certificates, I think the ambulance people took down a lot of the details from my birth support people.

I imagine if you were giving birth at home unintentionally, you might have called an ambulance at some stage for support, so there might be one there to take you to hospital soon after if you needed.

Brief description :

went to hospital they sent me home at 1cm - labour progressed super fast and DS was born on our bedroom floor

DH had 000 on the phone through the 2 hour full on labour (when i couldnt walk anymore!) and the ambulance arrived 30 minutes before birth. We stayed there for about 2 hours - BFing and chatting lol!!

Eventually ambo took us to the hospital (DH followed in car), got there at 1130pm (as i need sutured for 2nd degree tear) - we had baby checks the next morning and then went home.



As for birth certificate - we had our address on there for place of birth Did take a lot longer to get it (9 weeks i think) as they need to confirm it was legit as there were no people to sign the form etc.

the hospital when i got checked gave me the paper work (with their stamp) for registration/medicare etc.

I had a planned homebirth with #3 but if it wasnt planned he still would have been born at home as i didnt realise i was in active labour until i felt the urge to push! My labour was 2 hours but would have been closer to 1 hour had i not forced myself not to push in hopes that the midwife would make it (she didnt anyway). But even though i was having contrax they were so faint that it didn't feel 'real'. Then all of a sudden i hit transition and then yep i knew, and that is when i called the midwife (bit late obviously!). I'm so scared for next time being the same or even faster!

My DP had a dream 2 nights ago that we had an accidental homebirth - have to say I find the idea somewhat appealing! Tho with a first baby it's probably unlikely.......

DD was almost delivered in the ambulance. - they forced me to breathe through contractions and not push for 30 mins at 10cm!!!! that was terrible!
as soon as they wheeled me on the ward i pushed and out she came!

2 hr established labour with both kids!

My OB has me thinking this may happen to me... he said all is looking so good and the main thing i need to 'worry' about (though he said not really a worry) is that the baby may be born in the car!!! my 1st was 3.5hr labour...
in any case my ob will do an examination when i go for my 38/9 week appt - as i was 3cm dilated at this pt last time.. so we have some warning... and he said get into hospital pronto when i feel anything. he said no dawdling from me... or him!
anyway DH is going to read up what he would have to do... just in case. it isnt really what i want, though would be a good story to tell!
