Advice needed- if your waters break will they definitely keep leaking?

Ok so I'm questioning whether my waters broke yesterday when I was at the beach. Had a huge woosh and then trickle trickle for about 15 mins. Didn't do anything about it though as nothing else accompanied it. I'm pretty definite it wasn't pee as I didn't need to pee at all and it didn't come from the urethra.
Spoke to my student midwife this morning who said if it was my waters then they would keep leaking so its probably not them having broken. However when I said this to my mum she is of the opinion that if they break completely you can lose all the fluid and they won't keep leaking.
So I guess I'm asking for some advice. I have had increased CM since this happened yesterday and some very thick CM this morning when I got up with some much thinner stuff, but haven't had any clear fluid so I'm not sure. In terms of pain I'm having back pain and braxton hicks but no full on contractions at this stage. My tummy looks alot less full and DF says when he feels baby through my tummy it is alot easier to feel her and doesn't feel like she's in a big balloon anymore.

Thanks in advance for any advice I'm just a bit confused.

I would go to the hospital to get checked out, they don't have to keep leaking, when mine broke with DD 1, I lost the lot and even when I got to the hospital 1.5 hrs later I wasn't leaking anymore, and they were defintely broken. Also back pain and BH's I would say you are in labour

How far appart are the BH's?

I would go and get checked out just in case, they will be able to tell you if they have broken or not. You can have a hindleak and it can reseal, and waters do keep replenishing, but if you had a huge gush like you said, who knows... if you have a thermometer at home, keep an eye on your temp and definitely see someone if you have a temperature (in case of infection).

Ok just spoke with the hospital. Here's what midwife thinks. The lovely vagina is a hollow space... and when I was lying in the water apparently it has filled with seawater, then I have unconciously clenched my pelvic floor muscles or had a BH and woosh the water has come out.

She did talk about a hind water leak and said that it doesn't HAVE to keep leaking but it usually would. SO I have to monitor it all very closely and if anything doesn't seem right I have to call.

I've been taking my temp and its fine, I'm feeling a little warm but I did wash the car in the sun this morning and hang out the washing so I think I got a bit pink then.

Thanks for all your help all of you. Love being able to seek advice here.

It sounds to me like your waters have broken and that you are possably in early labour

Alan- do you think that it might not be what the miwife at the hospital has said?? Is there anything else I can look out for apart from the obvious contractions etc?

hmmm I dunno about the sea water... I mean wouldn't that happen every time we soaked in the bath or chilled out at the pool?
I wonder if the labour ward was busy & she was putting off having you come in?

When my waters broke it wasnt just one big gush for me but many small gushes and it continued for most of my labour (so over 24 hours).

I think your best bet would be to go in and be seen. The midwife from what i can tell is only making a guess (a very out there guess!)

    Good luck!

I had something very similar a week before I went into labour. I had been in the bath soaking for almost and hour and 10 minutes after I got out there was a gush of water down my leg. I was sure it was my waters breaking but it turned out to be the bath water. When I went into labour a week later my waters didn't break until I was in the delivery suite. Definitely get it checked out though.

Yeah I'm thinking I will see how I got over the next couple of hours. I am feeling a bit different since it happened so I just want to see what happens. If I'm still not feeling right I will have to go in.

    Hi Ella

I think it would be unlikely to be what the midwife said. What you need to consider is how much water did you lose when you had the gush? If it was more than a cup full then I would strongly suspect it was your waters. Have you ever been swimming before and got that much water in your vagina?

There is not really much you can do to check things if you have lost all your fluid. However if when you sneeze or cough and you leak some fluid then that is a sign that your waters may have been broken.

Also if your backache increases when you have a contraction that is a sign that you are in early labour.

I would actually call again as there would have been a change of shift and new midwives will have come on.

    Thanks for your replies:

Alan- nope I've never had that happen before which made me think at the time that it didn't seem right.

I've just been for a walk and I've been having contractions every half hour or so. Baby has completely turned and resumed the cephalic head down position that she was in for 3 weeks before yesterday happened. When I push on the top of my tummy its stings 'down there' so I'm assuming that is her head pressing on something down there.

Argh, why can't there be a little button that pops, kinda like a turkey that says 'ok I'm done prepare for take off'. I'm going to wait it out a bit and see if these contractions increase or anything else happens then I will give the midwives a call.

Well we went for a big drive today and I started having regular contractions. They were 8 minutes apart and it went on for 2.5 hours. THen I had to climb into the boot of my car and after I did that they stopped Still contracting but they are far apart now. Waiting for DS to go to bed and then I will be trying every single thing I can think of to get things to ramp up again.

Peeing every 5-10 minutes is very annoying by the way lol
