    Avoiding induction?

Hey ladies! A friend of mine is expecting her sixth baby, and she has been induced with four of her births already. Once she went into labour naturally, I think at 10 or 12 days post-dates (but because she was GBS positive, she had to go in for IV antibiotics. ). She was REALLY hoping for a homebirth with her previous baby, but ended up going 2 weeks over, and had to go in to be induced again. And the local hospital requires continuous monitoring for inductions, which means she's stuck in bed. Not much fun.

She has tried most of the "usual" natural induction methods, (although I don't think she's ever tried acupuncture yet).

I know that no one can make you go in to labour if you're not ready, but her body seems to be ready - baby is low, starting to dilate, lots of prelabour - she just can't seem to get over that edge and into the "real thing" without a nudge from the syntocin.

So what suggestions or help can you offer? This baby is not due until August, so she has lots of time to think and prepare and discuss plans with her midwife. She would really love to be able to experience a natural birth!

From my article: Induction of Labour - The Hidden Dangers of Labour Induction

“My pregnancies were all long. My twins were born by induction at 40 weeks and the next baby was born by induction at 42 weeks. By child number 4 I decided on a homebirth – which meant that I would need to go into labour naturally. Finally at 43 weeks and 4 days that happened. It isn’t recommended going that long, however, he was fine, although his skin peeled off everywhere. Baby number 5 was 42 weeks and 3 days, also born at home. I tried acupuncture, I drank gallons of raspberry leaf tea, I had so much sex I was sick of it. I believe that some women naturally have longer pregnancies and some have shorter. The women who spontaneously labour have their babies at 37 weeks fall into the ‘normal’ category and the unlucky women who go longer than 40 weeks unfortunately get landed with all the interventions. Choosing to wait for labour to occur naturally was very hard work as there was a tremendous amount of pressure to agree to an induction, however, I believed that my body must eventually labour spontaneously. I did agree to regular monitoring in the last week to check that the baby was OK.”
Aside from that, emotional blockages? Does she feel her body is capable and CAN labour without help?

No I don't think that she believes her body will go into labour on it's own, and I think she's afraid to go later than 42 weeks when it's so uncommon and everyone seems to think it's a terrible thing to do. And, of course, by that stage of pregnancy, most women are so tired and sore and ready to be done that an induction doesn't sounds like such a bad idea!

I'm going to suggest the acupuncture to her, definitely, and maybe see what she thinks about asking for more non-stress testing in the last weeks, instead of agreeing to an induction.

    Thanks ladies!

I think this was my biggest issue. I had a leak for 3 days, and it wasnt until the OB said "you will be having a baby in the next day" that I 'let go' (literally) and my waters flooded the room lol

Acupuncture is very relaxing too. Hope it helps! Even some massage or induction massage to let go.
