    Drinks for Labour

Did you use energy drinks for labour??What's best?? Gatorade, Vitamin water, Hydralyte?? Any ideas. Are some not ok?? I read on the side of one of those vitamin water drinks that it wasn't reccommended for pregnant women.

They did a study and found that women who alternated lucozade with water were less likely to have ketones in their urine. Although who knows if this is a significant thing or a normal physiological thing for a labouring woman... but still, there you go!

I can see a baby flying out with wiiings for some reason....

I haven't even tasted one of those energy drinks yet. Not one.
All I had to drink in labour was ice cold water. & I think I chewed ice at some point.

I felt too sick to drink anything but water, although the energy drinks (not the caffenated ones, the gatorade-type ones) would probably be good if you're not eating anything.
Personally, I had to be NAGGED to drink and suck a lolly pop. Make sure your support person knows to remind you to eat (or suck a lolly) and drink cause you may not think of it while in labour.

I had no idea! I had one the other day
Might be a good question for your MW? Or maybe Alan will drop in

I had Powerade.... DH stopped and bought some on the way for us (I was induced ) and I found I didn't want all the much of it (had better things to concentrate on ). I mainly ate and sucked on ice chips and the MW's got me to drink some water every now and then.

I have the book Birth and it has a recipe for 'Labourade'
    1/4 cup of honey
    1/2 teaspoon of salt
    1/3 cup of lemon juice
1 calcium tablet and 1 magnesium tablet - crushed
Mix ingredients and add about 1 litre of cool water

(Haven't tried it - don't know anyone who has - sounds yuck but there it is)

I know someone who swears by Labourade! I plan on trying it next time.

I personally had mostly water, with a few primas inbetween. Whatever you have, make sure you take straws with you! By the time you're past 5cms you're going to want someone else holding your drink for you I really recommend keeping up your fluids (and food too, if you can), but like Ren, I didn't want a whole heap of sugar making me buzz, so I stuck to mostly water. I did manage to eat a bit too though, (snack type things) including jelly, which the hospital provided! I loved that, DH spooning it to me while I was in the bath!

And yes, make sure your support person knows to encourage you in drinking/eating, as you will probably forget yourself.

the actual flavoured waters "Vitamin Water" are not recommended for use by preggie women (neither obviously are RedBull, V or Mother)
Also, if you get Boost (or similar) juices, be aware of their additives as most of them are also not suitable during pregnancy.

I had watered down Gatorade - in blue - I love that flavour LOL

But remember straws - the hospital had bottled water and straws for us and every time a contraction finished my doula and hubby would shove the bottle under my nose and make me sip ... grateful for that cos I think I ended up drinking around 2 lts - didn't feel dehydrated after the birth at all!

    Getting close - good luck
