Bath - I think if I was talking about it from a personal use point of view - mine would be to help clear my mind and bring my body into a point of time with my mind - without "baggage" so that I let go of whatever is holding me back from going into labour. I don't think I would be quite so willing to grab hold of a huge spliff and start suckin back in the middle of a contraction...
But my DH is QUITE fascinated about your prior drug experiences.. LOL
hehe... I'll never forget walking along a cement footpath in Fitzroy once when stoned... it was like walking on diamonds.
ETA: Now I think I'm having flashbacks! I haven't 'talked' about this in years LOL Oh and I wouldn't advise taking a LSD tab during labour! oooh no.... now that did make me hallucinate!

I am going to agree with Bath here. I used to smoke it quite a lot... well ok a **** load before I had kids, since then it's been something I have not really touched but i have never seen things that weren't there. That is a myth I believe.
I don't actually believe it is any worse than pethadine. And as far as I know there has been no proof that pot does anything to the baby. I personally wouldn't risk it but all the risks associated with pot and the unborn baby are quesses.
I would say yes, if all I had was green bananas and a pancake made from green butter I would go the pancake lol
Its funny isn't it. Because a drug is seen as primarily used by "stoners" we associate it as bad, yet people get addicted to Peth and it can REALLY screw you up but we see it as fine (not having a go here, I've had peth). I wonder if we had facts in front of us whether we'd trust the man made drug vs the natural albeit illicit drug. And I'm not stupid enough to suggest that natural = better so if you were going to quote me as saying that, please don't
Maybe we need to start a thread about our best and worst trips... lions and zebras eh Lulu? Was it like on the Discovery Channel? Gruesome? I once looked down my stairwell in to the depths of hell whilst under the influence of LSD... I went to church the next day... (I wasn't a church goer up to that point).
ETA: yep, I know what you mean Cai.... essentially a chemical is a chemical... the body doesn't know if it's illegal or not. I'm not a huge advocate for illegal substances... but then again legal ones can be just as bad for you.

What an interesting topic.
I have used it in the past, long before having children. My reaction depended so much on the actual batch and of course quantity. Sometimes it made me feel more relaxed, but often it made me feel out of control and uncomfortable - a feeling I definitely wouldn't like during labour.
So I guess, in small amounts, and if it definitely is all natural (not the hydroponic stuff), and I'm really desperate, I might consider trying it. I don't believe it would be much worse than syntocinon, epidurals and pethidine.
I would however be worried about the effects on the baby. But i would be worried about how syntocinon, epidurals and pethidine affect the baby, too.
I hope I won't get that desperate...
Sasa
I guess it's an interesting one to keep up your sleeve if society collapses and we lose the benefits of hospitals etc. I'm sure many ancient and non Western cultures have discovered postive uses of cannabis. But don't mind me I'm always thinking about things from the perspective of society collapsing If it does I'm bound to become an old witch-like croney who cultivates a garden of magical medicines!
Mushies: I once saw the Loch Ness gliding down the Peel river in Tamworth, no kidding.
Look, I have used cannabis to self medicate in the past and dammit, it works. Apetite, lack of sleep..its worked before and its a crapload better than Valium in my estimation...
What an interesting topic! I agree that there is proably a place for canibis in modern medicine. Interestingly enough canibus is a non addictive substance (unlike nicotine and alcohol) although people can become addicted to the feelings it gives. I have also seen it work marvels for terminally ill people - why not woman in labour? It would be great if they could do some more research to isolate the good stuff!
Ditto - MellI want to come to one of your dinner parties
ummm.....ok, never used it and i cant see myself using it in the near or distant future. Ive never smoked etc......
Very much a case of "i dont think i would be desperate enough to go there" !
Having said that - i am not judging anyone who would choose this as a form of induction. I think it wouldnt be wise if you were a first time user, but if you have used before and know how you would react then.....
Did you know Pethadeine, Morphine and Codeine are all opiates, closely related to Heroin. Yet we have all these things fine? Does it feel safer knowing that just because a drug is prescribed to you it somehow feels safer?
Now I'm not saying I'm for either or... just speaking out loud
Yep, the average woman feels ok about asking for pethidine during labour but she would probably be freaked if you could only offer heroin (you know, if society collapsed hehe). I know totally what you mean Cai.... peth is just a synthetic version of an opiate ie heroin... works essentially the same way on the body... as I understand it.
Rainbow: could you link? Um, which forum would be appropriate??? LOL
