Talk of induction already...i havent reached EDD yet !!!!

Had my last middy appt today.....baby very much down in the cervix, i can feel he/she pushing down. So last week i was 4/5 engaged....this week 1/5 engaged. Im feeling a little anxious, as you would with 2 days before EDD...but felt a little deflated this morning after discussion of induction was brought up, and the procedure, and a time booked in for an internal next week.....HUH ???? Can i least get to my EDD first......DH thinks im overreacting, but this is my 4th baby.....i KNOW my body can do this, ive only gone early with DD#3 (3 days early, others have been on or near EDD)......i said to midwife 'we dont need to book a time for next tues....coz i wont be there ' - meaning i would have already had baby, but she insisted....

I told mum. She is a nurse. She said public system have brought in induction plans/methods of late coz too many women were going over their EDD.....fair enough....but i cant help feeling a little flat now.....i soooo want to do this on my own, and i bloody well know i can, i want to scrap this mornings appt from my mind...but just cant....

Nothing like the pressure of an induction hanging over your head before you've even reached your EDD.

I've told DF that this time, they wont be allowed to even mention induction til I'm atleast a week past. (Medical reasons aside of course.)

Put your foot down and tell them to back off, they can't make you do what you don't want to do.

at my 40 wk midwife appt i was told at 41 weeks id be having an internal and booking in an induction,i kindly told them thanks but no thanks!! i wasnt having an internal or booking an induction, id see them at 14 days post EDD, they were a little shocked and were happy to forgo the interanl, didnt matter though as i had DD the next night!
dont let anyone bully or tell you you need induction, its more than normal for bub not to engage until labour!

I wouldnt mind asking the Middy why they take an ESTIMATED date as gospel? Babies come when they are ready and 42 weeks is still term. babies bake for between 37 and 42 weeks on average so I would just not show up for the appointment if they are saying we will do induction before 42 weeks!!

I honestly dont think bub will engage, ive never dropped (sooo many people say 'oh your still so high.....") Ive always carried high.

I just have to re-focus. I was so postivie b4 this morning......now im so tired to even think.

I know how you feel I've had both of mine 10 days post EDD. One of the reasons I went with my ob the last two times is because our local hospital really start putting the pressure on for induction at 9-10 days over, whereas my ob will let me decide when/how/if it happens (assuming baby and I are well of course).

Ultimately you know it is YOUR decision, but I really hope you go soon to avoid the stress of it all

Remember, unless he can show you any real, hard evidence right now (no not quotes right out of the textbook) that you or your baby is currently in danger or stress, then you are doing just beautifully!!! Hang in there... no evidence... no interference...

keep your appt next week - it's always nice to be able to say "told ya so"! and 7 days post dates isn't bad - always better to be prepared to see the middie just in case...

MBear - Hugs sweets. I had the induction talk at my 36wk apt when pregnant with Loren. It honestly did my head in for a couple of weeks. Then at the 40wk apt they ramped up the induction talks. At that stage I went with the flow and let them book in an induction date etc. I knew fully well that it wouldn't be needed. I never drop either and dispite the OB telling me at that 40wk apt that bub was not engaged ata ll and that he'll see me in 10days, I gave birth the next day.

Good luck sweets. Try and find a nice quiet moment and visualise bub moving down and getting ready for birth..I did this and it helped me focus on the job ahead.

It was same for me but it was the doc - was 4 days off EDD... I told him there'd only be an internal if I let him.... funnily enough Elijah was born next day. I would've only been 3 days past EDD at next appt. Sweetie, like you said - YOU know your body, tell them to bugger off unless it's for a medical reason they don't need to be interfering with nature. Which reminds me of something I saw on tv on the weekend.. it was a show about Orangatans and they showed one having a baby (really cool) but the guy said when someone was worried about something that he doesn't like to intervene with them and nature unless he REALLY has to which then made me think that's right!! .... ummmm OK SO WHY DO IT WITH HUMANS???

Its sad how people are trying to intefear with something that your body was made to do.
Your bubby will come when he/she is ready to. I would as all the ladies have sugested politley say no thankyou (unless of course if you or bubs has medical reason) and let your body guide you. You would know what your body needs after having children previously. Good luck your doing a great job

I got the feeling that they public system is stretched to the limit and booking in inductions helps control staffing levels.

hahah yeah and instead of more funding/staff, someone thought it would be a great idea to put women and their babies through more traumatic experiences, caesareans and complications than ever before! The same is happening in the private sector too though, Obs are so busy and booking out, they are overworking themselves. Nice to see so much comes before healthcare these days. And the govt still refuses to budge with independent midwifery which will lessen the burden... its all crap and until women complain (loudly and in the masses), not much will happen... just more govt inquiries.

I cancelled my clinic check up yesterday and didnt go because I knew they'd give me an internal and I don't want one.

Our babies will come when they are ready and no ones when "ready" is except our bodies.

I can't feel even a bit of pressure on my cervix or back and have no idea how "engaged" baby is...I really dont want any unnecessary poking or prodding so am happy to tell Dr where to stick it!

I have always been fairly blah about "the induction talk". I think I drive them nuts because my response is always the same.

"We'll book you in for this date"
"Thats nice, but I won't be there"

They can't make me do it, and I am not forcing my baby from my womb before they are ready to make their grand entrance. Until then, they can monitor baby all they please, but unless something happens, I am not walking in there and saying "Oh please complicate my otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy".

Yay - go Amanda! Its unbelieveable how the natural process of birthing has evolved into a dreadfully mismanaged business.

Hundreds of years ago - there would be no talk of estimated due dates (emphasis on the ESTIMATED!), or inductions, or internals, etc. A woman would just know she is pregnant, and wait for the magic to happen in its own time - whether it be at 38 weeks or 42 weeks - thats part of the mystery of life!!
The amount of women I have spoken to lately who were pressured into an induction simply because they were 'overdue', and told frightening things like "your baby will start to cook" or "your placenta will start to fail" or some other garbage, is crazy. No evidence was found to suggest that any of these women or their babies were in any danger whatsoever. The vast majority have ended up with an emergency c-section, and they all say the same thing - "when he/she came out - the staff all commented how perfect he/she looked - not a day overdue.."
It's not the babies that get it wrong - the system does. Stick to your guns chick!! Your baby knows exactly when the best time to birth is and he or she has little regard for rigid hospital agendas!!

oh Mbear honey - you just relax, you know your bod and your gorgeous bub better than anyone.
I hope this doesnt turn into an OB bashing though - this time it wasnt an OB!
I actually have found something interesting - my OB has been speaking to me about how fast labour may be (in a v calm way actually) and i was discussing this with a midwife - she seemed to think i was 'anxious' bc i was saying we were just worried what to do with DS at short notice.. and she suggested i ask for an induction before 39 wks so i can 'plan' for it. i was horrified and mentioned to my OB who said 'over my dead body' would i induce you before you are at least 10 days over - your body is made for this and you will do it naturally!
