With Isla when it got really bad, that transition stage I would say the word breath as I breathed. To remind myself to breath through it LOL. It helped I think.

Also this will sound weird. But with each deep breath in I pictured my cervix being pulled up kinda like when you pull a sock on, as you pull up your leg it becomes wider & thinner, As I breathed out i pictured the babies head moving down & out.

    I think these helped me

I also said the word Breath to myself and also told myself it would be over soon,. Was quite calming talking to myself! xo

Now I know this is a little off topic. BUT you know when ask or are told what labour feels like & the standard answer is period pain but worse. Well I don't get period pain so never knew what the hell they were going on about. Then I had a baby.
Then after said baby I had the same (TMI) pain when straining to do a poo. THAT pain in your stomach to me is the closest you will get to what to expect out of labour pain. Obviously a contraction is worse but the pain is the same if you ask me.

In my last few labours, I've spent a lot of my vocal energy sighing "open". "oohhhhhpeeeeeen". I would feel a contraction start and say "yes" with a long sound, and try to feel the contraction as an opening, a stretching. I found this reduced the pain, and also helped me welcome the contractions. I would try to greet each contraction with a smile, which relaxes the neck and jaw. "ooooohkaaaaaaay" featured a lot in transition.

I got through my last three labours without pain relief, largely because of this different way of greeting and experiencing the pain. I didn't end up making a lot of noise, really, with any of them. Maybe some grunting at the end

each ctx i had the blue animal from the backyardigans surfing on a surfboard, sining "riding the wave" some stupid song about riding a wave , but some one told me think of it like a wave and i randomly thought of a cartoon animal.. it annoyed the crap out of me , but it wouldnt go away

the tune of the song was catchy and i dont mind watching the backyardigans every now and then .. but wanted to picture my cervix opening .. but i was in complete pain and found it hard to concentrate ... i did reapte the word "breathe" to calm me down alot

For the first 24 hours with each contraction I breathed in and imagined my cervix drawing up, and then when i breathed out i imagined her head moving down. Worked well ... until it didnt... lol

ETA: It only stopped working because I was exhausted though, it was really really really effective, helped keep me focused on what was happening, what I was feeling.

I did a lot of grunting apparently ... but wat I "saw" was my breath coming in & going out.

    Love your imagery Lea!
