In my last few labours, I've spent a lot of my vocal energy sighing "open". "oohhhhhpeeeeeen". I would feel a contraction start and say "yes" with a long sound, and try to feel the contraction as an opening, a stretching. I found this reduced the pain, and also helped me welcome the contractions. I would try to greet each contraction with a smile, which relaxes the neck and jaw. "ooooohkaaaaaaay" featured a lot in transition.
I got through my last three labours without pain relief, largely because of this different way of greeting and experiencing the pain. I didn't end up making a lot of noise, really, with any of them. Maybe some grunting at the end![]()
