hi mrsmc - congrats on your PG

i was diagnosed with high blood pressure around 6 weeks with my PG. dr's always thought i had white coat as my BP was typically high on the first reading but would calm down. when i got PG my dr decided to get me to wear a 24 hour monitor & because my readings were high more than 25% of the time she decided to put me on medication. she also arranged for me to have a number of tests to check for my kidneys leaking protein and also for an extra scan at my 20wk us to check if i had any kidney damage from when i was younger. everything came back clear and so far the medication has kept my BP under control.

how did you go with your first PG? from what i've read, as long as the medication is keeping your BP under control, then things should be fine - so far i have had 4 weekly appointments at the hospital & they always check my BP, but i'm guessing that is standard practice anyhow?

the ob said that if i ever suffered things like blurred vision & recurrent headaches then i should let them know immediately but also said these things were fairly rare.

Can I ask what meds you are on?

The one I was on before TTC (Karviazide) wasn't good for pregnancy apparently, so they put me on Aldomet 250. I was taking one three times a day, but BP checked and it was still a bit high. I actually thought I was feeling really good!! Dr asked me when I went in for BT to double check pg (going back tomorrow for results but a billion tests later I have gotta be hehe) to start taking 2 tablets three times a day. We'll see tomorrow arvo if this has made a difference.

I had all those tests as well, I was seeing a specialist at RHW in Randwick and came back clear. I was under a lot of stress (fiance and I split when 7 weeks pregnant and with a one year old!!) living on my own without family etc, so I think that played a huge part in it. This time settled and happy with family and hubby so hoping it makes a difference!!

First preg low blood pressure!!! I actually passed out while driving and had a car crash! So have been completely different.

I am overweight, so every appointment even when not pregnant is harrassment and making me feel bad. I KNOW I have to lose weight (I am 5 foot 7 I think and 93kgs) but hassling me isn't going to help! Dr the other day asked me to do lots of walking. I don't think I eat all that much, not too much crap anyways, and I walk and run around after the kids all the time, so I don't know what to do?

I have limited myself to one if at all caffeine a day.... urgh its frustrating.

About the headaches... with 2nd preg with high bp, I was having terrible migraines. Had to get friends to mind my daughter some days I was vomiting and couldn't get out of bed.

Now you see why I am a little scared

Thanks so much for your reply!!!

i'm on aldomet 250 as well i'm taking one tablet twice a day.

i'm not surprised you had high BP with everything that was going on during your PG! and not so good that you had the migraines - i can see why you're a bit worried this time round. for me, i'm still in the 'ignorance is bliss' phase

i'm also overweight, but my dr told me it's probably more to do with genetics than anything else (both my parents are on medication for high BP & they're not overweight)...no one has made me feel too bad yet. i am trying to cut back on things like salt because i know that's not good & i've just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes so that is going to minimise any straying from a healthy diet

good luck with your BP tomorrow arvo - fingers crossed the change in dose has sorted everything out

Sometimes I wish I could fib to Dr's and tell them I do have high bp in my family so they would have an answer!!

Thanks for the luck tomorrow Sarah I'll come back tomorrow arvo and let you know how I go! Not taking my kids this time (thats enough stress and high BP in itself!!!) so should be a little easier. AND have booked in with a nicer doctor!!

    Hi,

I have essential hypertension (high BP not caused by pregnancy), mine is due to kidney disease for which i have had half my right kidney removed and it helped lower my BP somewhat but not completely.

I am on Metoprolol for the rest of my life. I have had 6 kids, all were conceived on this med and spent the entire pregnancy on this med with no complications other than they were all small. BP meds generally cause small babies so regular growth scans are in order, as im sure you already know.

For most of my pregnancies my BP has lowered and sometimes they have been able to lower my meds. But at about 34 wks my BP starts to rise and most of the time i end up being induced to due to high BP at 37/38 wks.

I hope your BP stabilises and you can have a trouble free pregnancy

Yep, I had scans every 4 weeks with my DS.

My issue is that my BP isn't being controlled, they can never seem to get it right!
