    Default Meds for High BP

    Hi Gals,
I have posted before that I am now taking BP meds to try and bring my BP down. My OB is consulting with a Renal Specialist to help get my BP under control.

I was just wondering, those of you who have been on BP meds during and after pregnancy, did you breast feed? I really want to try and breast feed and I am worried that being on these meds may prevent me from being able to. I will ask my OB at my next appt but just wanted to hear about your experiences.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tink x

what area are you in - there is a great guy at Nepean -get a referal to him if you can-they have clinics at Hospital too.

the best place to ring is Mothersafe - MotherSafe can be contacted on 9382 6539 for Sydney residents, or 1800 647 848 for NSW residents outside Sydney.
They have all the info on safe drugs for pregnancy and breastfeeding

    Hey Tinka,

I was on Aldomet in the week before and a couple of days after Kynan's birth and I breastfed (still am breastfeeding!). It may depend on the sort of meds and dosages you are on though so best ask your doc.

    All the best.

Yep, like Angel I was on aldomet for ages and am still feeding. Will have to have it for the next one too, so it can't be so bad.
Trish is right though, there's a great nephrologist at Nepean. Heaps of the girls on here have seen or are seeing him.
    Good luck

    Hi,

I have high BP without being pregnant so i am probably put on a different medication to what those with PIH are put on. I am on Metoprolol, but it is safe for use ttc and during pregnancy.

I suggest you ask your OB ALL of these questions and get on a med that will allow you to breastfeed right from the start if thats what you really want to do.

    Default Hey Fletch...

I am on Oxprenolol too. I started on 20mg a few weeks ago and now my OB and my Renal Specialist have put me onto 40mg. I have another appt in about a week and a half to see how things are going.

Did you need to start taking meds early on in your pregnancy? What dose did you take? My specialist said that I will likely require 80mg by the end..
Did you have BP problems prior to falling pregnant? Did you take meds afer bubs was born? How long for??

Ohhh I am a sticky beak. I am just relieved to find someone else who has had to have the same meds as me. I was really worried in the beginning that it would hurt my bubs but my scans are showing a healthy growing bundle!

I look forward to hearing more about your experience.

Nope to the first question, I developed Pre Eclampsia at 37 weeks 2 days. My meds were and still are 100mg. Nope I had no BP problems before falling pregnant. Yep my BP got locked in high so I was still taking them up to a few weeks ago. Last time I had my BP taken it was way down, the lowest it had been since I got sick, I took it one day the other week and it made me feel a little dizzy so I stopped. I will have to have a blood test soon anyway and I will go back and get my BP checked again.

    Hi,

The mention of Labetalol reminded me that at one point during my third pregnancy i was switched to Labetolol as my other meds werent lasting me the entire day, so i was put on 1 x 100mg tablet 3 times a day (300mg a day), but as soon as baby was born i was switched back to my old BP meds.

Did you need to start taking meds early on in your pregnancy? No, i was on them before i fell pregnant.

What dose did you take? I take 25mg twice a day of Metoprolol and when on the Labetolol 3 x 100mg a day.

Did you have BP problems prior to falling pregnant? Yes, i have renal artery stenosis and had half my right kidney removed when i was 16. Before the surgery i needed 3 seperate BP meds to control my BP, they hoped the operation would get me off of all of them but i still have high BP which is thankfully controlled by only one med now. Every time they try to take me off of them though my BP goes back up so it looks like i have to take them for life.

Did you take meds afer bubs was born? Yes. Normally my BP goes up around 36 wks and absolutely haywire for a few weeks after the birth while my hormones settle.

How long for? I dont get off of them.

Like the PP, I, too have to have lots of ultrasounds to check babys growth and placental and umbilical function. I have had quite little babys with 3.2kg being my biggest out of 4 but that may also be my build. My babys have been 2.7kg (6pd), 3.2kg (7pd3), 3.2kg (7pd1), 2.5kg (5pd5). Just over 7 pd seems to be my biggest i can have.
