So I've been given some great advice on Facebook, but thought I would post here too for more experiences.
DD has started biting. She's broken the skin twice, once last night and once just before. Just before was quite bad, and now not only am I very sore, but I'm really quite scared at every feed I've called the ABA line and I'm trying my best with the firm 'no', putting down, pushing into breast etc. I'm pretty sure DD is teething her top teeth ATM (she has her bottom two), so I'm hoping she might stop with the biting when she's not teething, and that the techniques I'm using right now deter her.
Help! I'm dreading each feed and my right nipple is bloody and sore.
Hugs hun. Ds is a biter when teething and it hurts. I found taking him off when he was doing the flutter tongue at the end of the feed seemed to help, so he was only on when drawing milk. I have had great success with the aba advice of firm no and place baby on ground.
This too shall pass! (chant while levitating and juggling housework and baby)
Just subbing as we have the same problem here. DD has been biting on and off since she got teeth at 4months. I did find the shoving her into the breast helpful until the last month but now she just laughs.
Ds was the same. He bit when teething. And yep, It f-ing hurt. It got to the point where I woulda tear up at the thought of feeding him. Nothing but time stopped him (sorry ). Nurofen and his amber necklace helped a lot.
Both girls would bite when they were teething (or trying to play), and in the end I would pull them off immediately. I would offer again and if they tried it again they were pulled off. Didnt take long for them to work out that I didnt like that behaviour.
good luck, it takes a few times for them to work out what you mean but once they do it works well
Letting bub suck on a cold face washer before you feed can numb the gums abit and reduce the propensity to bite. Rubbing her gums gently can help some bubs.
Have your finger ready to insert into her mouth if you can tell when she is going to bite, or if she only has some of the nipple in her mouth. Take her off and get better attachment.
Support her head/shoulders- sometimes bubs bite down because they feel like they are going to fall.
Doing a loud 'no' never really worked for me (i know it is often recommended), i prefer to try to engage with bub, eye contact and chatting, to try to identify triggers and then stop it before it happens. If it continued, then the feed stopped (for a few mins) and we did something else.
DD has just gone through this phase OUCH!! It was while getting the top 2 teeth, and I did the firm NO and put on the floor. Mind you she usually just laughed at me! It will pass xx
Sorry to revive an old thread but DS has just started biting down on me - he's not even 3 months old yet, no sign of teeth but geez it's like pinching your nipple in a vice when those little gums clamp down!
I've tried detaching him and saying NO, that hurts! but he just grins at me. Cheeky little monkey! I think he's a little bit young to put him on the floor unless it's his play-mat or something I guess though..but worried that might give him the association that it's a game?
jazzy definately did it when she was teething we used to put on bonjela every feed i had times where i was bleeding horribly andi had thrush at the same time
