OBJECTIVE. We aimed to provide information that can be used as a guide to clinicians when advising breastfeeding mothers on normal lactation with regard to the frequency and volume of breastfeedings and the fat content of breast milk.
METHODS. Mothers (71) of infants who were 1 to 6 months of age and exclusively breastfeeding on demand test-weighed their infants before and after every breastfeeding from each breast for 24 to 26 hours and collected small milk samples from each breast each time the infant was weighed.
RESULTS. Infants breastfed 11 ± 3 times in 24 hours (range: 6–18), and a breastfeeding was 76.0 ± 12.6 g (range: 0–240 g), which was 67.3 ± 7.8% (range: 0–100%) of the volume of milk that was available in the breast at the beginning of the breastfeeding. Left and right breasts rarely produced the same volume of milk. The volume of milk consumed by the infant at each breastfeeding depended on whether the breast that was being suckled was the more or less productive breast, whether the breastfeeding was unpaired, or whether it was the first or second breast of paired breastfeedings; the time of day; and whether the infant breastfed during the night or not. Night breastfeedings were common and made an important contribution to the total milk intake. The fat content of the milk was 41.1 ± 7.8 g/L (range: 22.3–61.6 g/L) and was independent of breastfeeding frequency. There was no relationship between the number of breastfeedings per day and the 24-hour milk production of the mothers.
CONCLUSIONS. Breastfed infants should be encouraged to feed on demand, day and night, rather than conform to an average that may not be appropriate for the mother-infant dyad.

I had some cashews and fed Colby a while later and he came out in a fiery red rash across his cheeks and chin. It looked awful. It hung around for about an hour or 2 and then left.
The cashews were the only thing I'd eaten.
Someone please tell me it is all worth it :( Im trying to not get down but my body really hates me. I EBF to 6 months and then introduced solids. I got my period EXACTLY 28 days later and was very dissapointed that I wasnt one of those moms who didnt have to have a period. It wasnt a problem until about 4 months when I believe I started ovulating. Now, ever since (she is 8.5 months) my supply drops dramatically during ovulation and my period. During that time she is so angry and scratches me and screams all day. I just miss feeling that loving connection when I fed her...now I feel like crap during those times.
Oh TM that sounds so frustrating. I didn't know that happened actually. No advice, just a hug- I think I'd feel the same way.
Does your LO take EBM? Some EBM over those days, on top of BF, might help get you both through it.

Charlotte, i talked to couple mates who have bubs with allergies/intollerances. They said best way of checking it out is to not eat the food for 2 weeks, and thhen try it (little bit) and see if there is a reaction.

I REALLY hope that he's not allergic to nuts. It's hard enough with DD not being able to eat a bucket load of things.
But, on the upside, breastfeeding is going really well. Still had zero issues since he was born, apart from the first week being uncomfortable.
Any tips on breastfeeding and teeth? DS is 14 weeks and has a really swollen gum. He's been very attached to me the last week or so and is a dribble monster.
It takes at least 2 weeks to clear the system, yeah. There's an LC/dietician in Perth who does phone & email consults if you're interested. She can give you good advice, also.

When DD was tiny she had about 11 feeds in a 24 hour period.
It's full on!
How do I know when his little tummy is full? I've noticed if he's had too much he will throw up heaps. But whenever I give him tummy time he keeps looking for the nipple, sucking on the blankets, his hand, shirt, whatever is in front of his face. Is that hunger or just.. weird baby behavior? He only ever does it when he is on his tummy.
They do suck on anything, DS fed 2 hourly for about 4 months but did start only feeding 4hrly at night early on. I ended up setting the airbed up on the floor and would free him whilst I slept. It's amazing what positions you can fall asleep in when you're that tired. It does get better, you do just learn to trust your instincts and what your babies hunger signs are.
DD still had 10-12 feed s a day at 12 months. 2nd time around, i don't count feeds at all.
some days i would like detachable boobs.
DD is living off air at the moment with milk and solids. She's become such s snacker but even snacking she's only wanting to breast feed every 4 or so hours.
Today has been very busy and aftr everything was said and done I realized Ive only nursed Violet 3X all day! She hasnt complained but usually I make her eat every 2 hours since she sleeps 12 hours at night :(

Can somebody refresh my memory? I just bought a new bf bra, I love it so much. My current one (well, the main one, I have other daggy ones but they're not a great fit etc) is a soft cup with flexiwire, and I've been spilling out of it a but lately, so went a size up with the new one. So old one is a 16E, I got a 16F. New one is a moulded cup, and flexiwire again. It's a good fit but has a little bit of room in it, not so much that I can't wear it now though. It's good to have a bit of room in your bra for those weeks of milk coming in, engorgement, settling etc, right? I know it's only been 16 months since I had a newborn but I'm not really remembering well lol.
That is what the lady at Triumph told me when I went in to get my fitting just as my milk was coming in with DS (about day 4) - though I did find that I didn't have as much engorgement the second time around and boobs settled down a bit quicker too.
Ugh, teeth! We're having problems with top teeth scraping and leaving little indents on the top of my nipple while DS feeds. I'm trying to be more careful with his latch and making sure he opens wide, but it's still happening. And it gets uncomfortable after a bit, especially when he's sucking really strongly. On the plus side - wow, we're still feeding 2 weeks before his first birthday!
Ouchies CK! But hooray for being so close to the one year mark! Must be the timing, DD began having a truly terrible latch just before her first birthday, when previously I'd not had a single issue since day one. Hope he eases up on you!
We're still going here, "boo" is the first thing DD asks for when I get home from work :) Finding time and space to express at work is getting harder and harder, but I'm working around it. I'm finding that just recently I've "had" to tell more people that I'm still breastfeeding her - not that I hide it, it just doesn't come up often. But I've given up caffeine to try and help her sleep better so people ask why. Not a single negative comment yet, only positivity! Even from male colleagues!
PZ, mine settled more quickly with no 2 too. Both with engorgement, size and leaking. Didn't need my bigger sized mat bras for anywhere near as long.
Yay CK - nearly a year! Pay attention to DS's latch and take him off and reattach if it doesn't feel right. That might help.
We are still going. 13 months expressing, 8 months breast feeding. DS isn't having NG tube feeds anymore Yaaaay!! He's only BF 3-4 times in 24 hours, rarely feeding through the day.. The last 2 days he has had a BF in the morning then not another one til 4 or 6pm and even that took some persuasion.. Anyway, I hope we can settle into a good rhythm which results in me being able to wean down on all the tablets I'm on (motilium, fenugreek, blessed thistle) and possibly the expressing as well..
Hooray for no more ng feeds Blessed! I don't think I've said it in here before but I'm so in awe of you. Just reading again what you've gone through to feed your DS, it's just incredible. Hoping with you that you can stop the tablets soon!
Blessed you are such a champ for going this long. Have a celebration, no more ng feeds how exciting. You are doing an amazing job, hopefully you can start weaning off those tablets soon.

That's so wonderful, BAL! Must be nice to not have to worry about that NG tube too. And how fantastic that you've gotten him to 13 months with no formula! He certainly seems to be thriving and it's hard to believe he was born so early to look at him now. He's clearly a happy, healthy little boy.
DD2 is much more into food and water now and still seems to be bfing as often, but maybe not as much. She's also not bothered if she eats and drinks from her cup before a bf now. I'm mostly waiting for her to ask for a bf, although if she's getting whingey and tired I just give her one before putting her to bed. She is not the booby fiend that DD1 was though and I very much doubt she'll bf for as long. Hoping for two years at least though. I think she'll be normal and want the night time feed for longer at least, which gives me hope! She's just not as needy for cuddles and a bf in the morning as DD1 was. Funny how different they can be.
And for a baby led solids baby, DD2 loves being spoon fed. :rolleyes: Some things (like weetbix and yoghurt) you just cannot use your fingers, but DD2 gets lazy every now and then and if I pick up food to hand to her she just lunges at it with her mouth. Funny thing. DD1 was so active in feeding herself that she learnt to use a spoon or fork by 12 mths, but DD2 still waves it around and splatters stuff.
Aww, thanks everyone :) I'm glad the NG tube is out, even when I do express now, it's purely to keep my supply, I am not obsessed with the amount I am pumping.. I have been so blessed to have amazing women that donated their EBM to me as well.. Their job is done now ;) I just really hope I can slow down the expressing but still maintain enough supply to have DS at the breast for a while yet :) My expressing goal is Feb, I'll most likely stop then, which may mean the end of my supply which in turn may mean the end of BF.. I don't know yet though, if I only have to express twice a day I might be able to push on for a while longer. I love feeding, hate expressing. Feeding is so beautiful and gives me nice feeling, expressing is painful :( I would love to get to a point where we are just feeding, but I think I am starting to accept that my lactation will be winding up soon in one way or another..
For now though, I am proud that we have come this far, I'm proud that despite me having supply issues and DS having to be supplemented we have both pushed through and I have always been able to provide DS with breast milk, even if sometimes it was from another Mama :D

So after 5 months AF has returned... I forgot how much I dislike her!!!
Can this affect my milk? Ie flavor, quantity...?
Just noticed dd was a bit more restless and woke earlier than normal leading up to it? Can a hormone change in me effect her?
Also she has stopped pooing daily and seems to go a 2-3 days. All normal?
Not sure about the impact of AF on the flavour of your milk, but yes - skipping poos for a few days here and there is completely normal.
Watch out for signs that they might be a bit clogged up, but DS1 would sometimes go for a week without pooing! I was reassured by the Dr, the MHCN and other mummas on BB that this was not a concern whatsoever ... I think the longest he went sans poo was 10 days.
