It's a really hard time when they're like that! It does pass... eventually. Some parents might find that weaning helps, but for others it's just the same, only no boobs to help! Good luck, whatever you decide.

Have you tried going out and letting you DH work out his way of settling your little one? I avoided going out for a loong time because i (we) thought i was the only one that could get dd to sleep. Through necessity, i had to be away and then it wasn't as bad as we thought, and they worked out their own way of getting dd to sleep. It also strengthened their relationship. I also had to let DH work out his own way, trying to mimic my methods just wasn't going to work.
Peanutter - is there a specific time when your little one is biting? Do you think it is just his age, or part of the breast refusal? :hugs:
i find it interesting how there is so much variance in 'co-sleeping' and breastfeeding. I wear a top to bed so i have to actually get my breast out, i don't have it available to baby at all times. I usually lie on my side, feed bub, he goes to sleep and detaches or gets detached, i cover up and go to sleep. He wakes up, i pull him over me to the other side, feed bub, he goes to sleep..... repeat.
I never worked out how to feed baby from the top breast, so have to do the switch sides thing. I have actually woken a few times with DS crawling over my head to switch sides. After the feed, he generally wants to roll away (to be spooned) or to lay on his tummy. Quite different to DD who always wanted to be right up close.
so much variance, i have to wear a top and still shove washers down my top so I dont leak everywhere, if I lay down to feed I end up falling asleep as well, and then wake up when she starts feeding again, and by then i want to roll or some space. her night feeds only take 10-15mins anyway. you just atomatically do what works. I was talking to a mum at playgroup about when to move bub into her own room and I was saying the thought of getting up out of bed in the middle of the night is what turns me off, and she said, but you just do it, you know you need to, so you just get up and do it, and it soon becomes automatic and she does that in her sleep. (im not planning on moving her out, it came up because this mum is now pregnant with her 2nd and was trying to move her own dd to her own room to make room for the baby.)
Yeah, but i'm not going to do it (get out of bed to feed bub in middle of night) if i don't have to! DD night weaned at 15 months (pregnancy and illness induced) and she moved into her room at 18 months. i don't think i could have done it earlier with her. However, I am hoping to be able to move DS earlier, probably into DDs room. Getting up once or twice is ok, getting up 4 or 6 or 8 times is just silly.
We have tried me just going out and seeing how they get on - it was a couple of months ago now though, as it ended with DH calling me to come home and DS screaming until the second I walked in the door. He was getting better for a while, it was taking longer for DS to arc up but still he won't settle down and sleep for DH.
I moved DS out of our room when he was about 4 months - just worked better for us, we both slept better. It does mean getting up every so often, usually once or twice a night but yes there are nights where it's a lot more - mostly because of teeth.
Speaking of teeth....we're still having a few issues with scraping. Seems it crops up again every time another tooth breaks through. This might be contributing to my general don't want to do this anymore-ishness
teeth CK! yes that would make it more uncomfortable for you if not painful. are they top or bottom teeth your little one has got? (just checked how old he is, prob both =P) I dont have any advice on the teeth. Spock has just gotten her first one!!(yay) its a bottom, and I don't notice it at all. (yet)
Yep, he has 4 across the top and 4 across the bottom plus I wouldn't be surprised if more were on the way. The top ones are the pesky ones, I barely noticed the bottom ones but when he's tired the top ones rest on top of my nipple and leaves little indentations. It is getting rather uncomfortable but as much as I try to encourage him to open wide and am careful with his attachment he still slips as his jaw gets tired
Ah! Teeth make everything harder!
Yeah, my son is at a similar stage with teeth, and kinda too young to understand when i say "big mouth".
He seems to do it when he gets a bit distracted. No rhyme or reason otherwise.
Spock has started grabbing my nipple by the hand and then putting it in her mouth. very very cute, but can be a bit painful when her nails get in the way =\
Dd does this too. Apparently they are the most exciting things ever!! :)
Sometimes she pulls the shield off (yes STILL going with it) and puts it in her mouth and wants to play with the nipple lol!
they are
My son asked me what bras were for.
They're for holding up boobs.
But then you can't see them!
Haha that is such a boy comment!!!
It will never change...just the reason lol!
lol MadB.
I had a lovely chat with my nephew/godson when i was bf Spock today, he (4) was happily explaining to me that spock was drinking milk from my boobies and telling me how he use to drink milk from his mummies boobies.
Spock has started trying to feed in different (awkard) positions. mainly on my right she will turn her head to lay inbetween my boobs and look to the side. it looks cozy and works in theory but my boobs dont quite go that way and milk drips everywhere cause she is only half on..
Just wanted to say YAY, I'm bf again  I know DD only weaned like 5 months ago, but I really missed it, especially with a newbie. No problems at all this time, my supply is settling nicely after some epic engorgement (although I still have enough milk for 2 babies or more!). It's great bf a second time around :)
Yay, PZ! Has DD1 shown any interest?
Next week will be one year bfing DD2 and a few weeks later will notch up five years of bfing in total. :o
Very useful bbs!
That's great PZ, sounds like you're settling into things nicely.
Congrats Jen! The year has gone really fast
Help! DS does stinky rotten egg farts. I've been blaming the dogs but after been away from them for 2 days and the room still smelling like egg fart... I've concluded something I'm eating is not agreeing with the lad :( so the process of elimination begins. Will try dairy, then wheat as I sometimes have problems with them if I have too much. But if its not those what else should be on the list? And how long should I eliminate the food for to see whether that's it, 1 week, 2 weeks, a month?
A friend of mine's DD was doing poosplosions and all sorts of gassy delights, so the Dr got her to start by eliminating all cruciferous veggies and bulb veggies ... so no cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brusselsprouts, and no onions, turnips, garlic, etc.
I think dairy and then wheat were after that.
I think each stage went for two weeks ... ?
Lady Neon, I wonder if it might have something to do with Christmas foods??
Is he otherwise well Lady N? Maybe just wait and see a bit before subjecting yourself to all that? Or else, perhaps talk to a dietician/LC who can guide you through the process.
Yeah he's fine. Doesn't have any more pooplosions than any other baby his age. He does squirm a bit after a feed and farts a few times.
We don't celebrate Xmas, so no out of the ordinary food.
Hey guys :) After a bit of an information top up. I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but it's axing how quickly you forget huh?
I think my supply just seems to have settled, but I'm wondering if it's okay that my boobs don't really feel full or get engorged anymore? DD2 just did her longest stint sleeping since birth, which was 5-5 and a half hours, and my breasts are still completely soft. I'm guessing the answer is, that's fine, it's normal, there's still plenty of milk, your body is doing this a second time and that's why things settled quicker? Is that correct? While I know it's most likely normal, I had engorgement for months and months with DD1, and in a weird way found it reassuring lol! DD2 has LOTS of wet and dirty nappies, and has gained 450g from her birth weight, so I know she's getting enough to eat :)
Totally fine. I had 9+ years between my babies and my boobs still settled quicker the second time around. Enjoy not having oversized rock hard lumps :)
Yep, all good. You know the signs to watch to tell whether she's getting enough and it sounds like all is going very well.
Sounds like its going well PZ!
I do the same thing- worrying each time about my supply. Haven't had an issue yet. So nice to get reassurance though isn't it !
My bbs settled super quickly second time around (thank goodness). Such a relief, isn't it! From the sound of her weight gains, she can handle a nice long sleep. Enjoy!
My little chubby put on 300g in her first week. I think the ease of birth and post-birth for bubba and you at home gives you both a better chance to settle in.
Awesome, thanks guys! Great to know that I've avoided too much of that awful engorged phase and can just get down to business. I love knowing what I'm doing this time around, no worrying or learning about positioning etc. Today I went shopping and loved that I was just walking around the stores feeding DD2 while I browsed stuff. So easy :)
You remember me doing a massive freak out about soft boobies in the first few weeks after DS was born, don't you PZ? :)
You're doing wonderfully :)
Just wanted to say IVe almost made it to a year and Im so excited. I never thought we would get this far. Im just happy every month we make it. We still have to give her one supplement bottle of donor milk a day but everything else is mommys milk.
Yay The Mrs, well done you!!!
Just wondering if anyone has any tips to try and get bub to take ebm. I am in no hurry to wean but it would be handy to know that the girls can take a bottle if needed. So far we have tried bottles, sippy cups/bottles, cups and me being completely out of the picture to no avail.G has been known to take two hours to drink a bit from a bottle and last time my SIL tried (and she would be persistent) she ended up bringing E home to me. I'm sure if they were desperate enough they'd take it but I can't bear the thought if them getting that worked up.
Is there anything else I can try or do I just have to accept that some babies just will not take a bottle?
That's great The Mrs!! Well done!
Melissa, yes unfortunately there are some babies who just won't take a bottle! Have you tried a few different types of bottles? Some babies prefer a different teat for some reason. You could try warming it slightly or leaving it cold?
The good news is once they get a bit older and start family foods their dependence on breast milk will decrease so you will be more able to leave them that little bit longer without worrying about breast milk - the will probably just feed more when you return to make up for it!
DD2 never liked drinking EBM from a bottle though did from a sippy cup after she was 1 I think, was quiet stressful but did pass, she did take milk from a spoon at around 6 months I remember.
it is currently 44 degrees here. we are all struggling. Spock hasn't bf much at all today at all, I've offered regularly but she just has one suck and refuses =( but, I got some of my frozen EBM out and put it in the mesh feeder and wow she inhaled it!! kept wanting it topped up with more and more. was fantastic, because 1. I was acutally getting through some of my stash. 2. it was BM so I knew she was hydrated when eating it (rather than just using ice). 3. the frozen fact was keeping her cool and 4. the frozen fact was also helping her because she is teething!! (just got her 2nd one). =) frozen EBM FTW!!
What a great idea! Being close can be unbearable in the heat, for babies too.
Nice one T :D
Just a quick question... Breast milk changes in the hot weather to become more watery yeah?
Does that mean dd will need more feeds to get the usual "food" amount?
Hmm little o not sure about that... I know that babies will generally feed more frequently than during normal weather, but it is my understanding that it is more about thirst-quenching, due to the fat content of the milk at the start of a feed being lower than at the end.
That doesn't really make sense - here's some info from the ABA website:
I'd reckon that because she's feeding more frequently she'd get the right amount of food :):
Breastmilk contains a perfectly balanced ratio of food and water to meet all your baby's needs. It is a living fluid, ever-changing to suit your baby and even in response to the weather! The first milk your baby gets from a full breast has a low fat content and naturally quenches baby's thirst. Once the let-down has occurred, the fat content of the milk gradually increases as the breast softens. This later milk has a creamier appearance and satisfies baby's hunger.*
In hot weather a thirsty baby may want to breastfeed more frequently but for shorter periods. In this way he is getting more low-fat milk and so is satisfying his thirst. If you need to be away from your baby, it is preferable that he has your expressed breastmilk (EBM).
i don't eat as much, or as many 'heavy' foods when it is hot. Probably babies don't need or want as much food either, but do want the fluids to keep cool.
