Thought I'd poke my head in here ladies!
BAL - what an achievement, well done!
Little O - the return of your cycle can change your milk, as your hormones change, which can affect your milk. Some mums find their baby doesn't seem to mind, some mums find their baby is a bit fussier than usual at that time. Just keep feeding - even if your LO doesn't like it, it will go back to how it was soon enough and all should be fine!
AFM: my littlest man is feeding really well! He seems to be super fast though, which I hadn't expected so soon, he's only 4 weeks! Maybe he knows I don't have an hour to sit around feeding him, with two others to keep me busy. My let down is a lot more painful this time round... Strange.
OP: DS2 is so much quicker that DS1 too! DS1 would normally take 45-60 mins, but anything up to 90 minutes. DS2 is rarely more than 30 mins, and generally he's done in 20 minutes - including a mid-feed nappy change :o
Yeah DS2 is similar - about 20 I reckon! Must just be a second/subsequent baby thing?
Dunno ... total different personality here - DS2 has only fallen asleep on the boob twice :o DS1 I constantly had to keep walking up, to get him to have a proper drink.
And later, he would get so distracted ... DS2 - heaven help you if you get between you and "his" boobies when he wants a drink.
OP - i had really painful let down with DS at the start but it settled after a few months? i don't remember it being painful with DD at all.
DS is quicker than DD was too.
Congrats BAL on 12 months, and for no more ng feeds.
DS has started middle of the night poos again, very overrated.
i get painful let down but in the boob im not feeding from. still squirts across the room too
Sometimes when we change DD in the morn there is a nice big sloppy one waiting but if she does it before any of her night feeds I never notice so there it stays unless she's obviously smelly, leaking or upset.
AF recently returned for me too, at 8 months. But she barely made an appearance, was very light and wishy washy and only lasted a few days.
So I've posted about this already in it's own thread but I've had an awful tummy bug- the worst of it didn't quite last 24 hours but I've had my first milk supply issues since when my milk was late coming in after birth. I've lost 3 kilos, I'm already small so there wasn't much give there anyway, I'm eating now but for 12 hours couldn't eat or drink a thing without chucking, and for 24 could drink but not eat much. DD is fighting with the boob because she's used to quite a fast flow and now that she has to work harder for it she point blank refuses to stay on long enough to drink properly, thus help build up my supply again. I'm drinking Weleda boob tea, drinking lots of water and *trying* to eat normally again but it's hard because at her age she's already dropped a couple of feeds and only wants to go on the boob if absolutely necessary. I wouldn't be so impatient if i wasn't having a weekend without her on the 17th - I had been pumping to build up a stash of EBM but I don't quite have enough yet but now with this bug I can't really pump anything.
Don't let it stress you out ladylove - when DS1 was 4 months, I had to have suurgery, and I wasn't allowed to eat anything at all the day before, and was fasting completely from miand had to have some treatments which completely cleared out my digestive system, intestines, bowel etc, and I had to fast completely from midnight, and then I was under general anaesthetic for several hours for the surgery, and *then* I was on a fluid only diet for three days.
Still managed to exclusively breastfeed during that time.
The afternoon after the surgery, my milk was almost clear and was vaguely blue because it was so thin, but we powered through it - you'll be fine. It will thicken up soon.
Hopefully you'll feel better in no time.
Thanks peanutter, that means a lot. I think things are improving- I felt a letdown while out and about today in between feeds and my boobs feel slightly fuller. I know fullness isn't an indicator of supply but it sure is comforting.
Any advice regarding teeth and bf'ing? DS (4mos) is getting his first toothy!! Seems I have another early teether. He's an unhappy little man at times and refuses to latch. Do I just ride it out? Try and feed him when he's happy, rather than wait til he's hungry? Will anything change with his feeding once the tooth pops through? It's pretty close to cutting.
Also, at just on 4 months, DS has gone from a birth weight of 2.8kgs to 7.1kgs :)
OMG Charlotte that weight gain is impressive! DD weighed 7.6 at 8 months!
As for the teething, DD's first two were out by 5.5 months but for a good while before she was just as you say- not wanting to latch etc. I just rode it out. Sometimes it seemed like she was barely drinking anything in a day but I had to learn to trust she'd take what she needed. Maybe just that and no more, but enough. Then eventually things righted themselves.
not sure re teeth - DS1 had the presence of mind not to get any teeth until after weaning. FX DS2 does the same!!
Fabulous weight gain, though, mumma! Clearly your boobies are doing just what they ought to be doing.
bottom teeth had no impact on feeding. normally babies tongue covers their bottom teeth when feeding. top teeth can be more stingy cos they are sharp little things. its a good reminder to pay attention to attachment.
I had no issues with bottom teeth. He seemed to nibble a little as first top tooth was coming down and is doing the same now cuz the second top tooth is coming down.
I have noticed with the top tooth that depending on the position his top tooth digs in a bit and can leave an indentation mark lol not super painful but a little uncomfrotbale at the time.
Oh sorry Charlotte I thought you meant fussiness with latching, not latching technique- we've had no problems with DD's bottom front teeth, the top are cutting through at the moment so not sure how they'll go in that respect.
I haven't had any issues with DS's bottom teeth but when he was teething he bit me a lot. Mainly when he was coming off.. He hasn't done it for a while now, thank goodness.
I am so excited, now that DS isn't having NG feeds I can donate my surplus EBM :) I feel so happy I can do this for another Mama and baby :D
DS's top teeth are giving me grief. Bottom ones are fine, but the top fronts rest on the top of my nipple when he gets sleepy and leave little indentations.
BAL - that is wonderful, your generosity is beautiful
Well, our perfect run is over :( We've been breastfeeding over 21 months now, and I have been very very lucky to have had no issues at all. Until now. I've gone and given myself a massive blocked duct! D: D: D: When I feed at home I usually just pop my breast out the top of my shirt if I'm wearing a singlet, and this afternoon I got lazy and didnt make sure my right was completely out. And never noticed that my tops were a bit tight along the bottom of it. Just put DS to bed and noticed a MASSIVE hard lump on the underside of it :( I've fed him from that side and tried to massage it as best I could while he was feeding and its a bit softer. Can I massage it while he isnt feeding? Whats the best technique? What else can I do to try and stop mastitis coming? I am so devo, we have had a 100% perfect run until now!! I am so stupid!
ouch! Sounds like you're pretty upset with yourself, but you've done well to get on top of it already.
Some ideas here - https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bf-.../blocked-ducts
Thanks MadB :)
I'm more upset that I was so silly in not making sure I was feeding correctly, I guess after so long I became a little lazy lol
Hope it feels better soon. I had my first nipple damage with DD1 not long before she turned two. Was so frustrating! But it did heal okay in the end and she bf for another two years.
DD2 is turning into a toddler, still bfing plenty, but clearly dropping off a bit during the day and eating so much more. She's caught me unawares coming off in an ouchy way in the last couple of days (distracted ) but she cries if I even flinch! She's a bit sensitive like that. So there won't be any biting here, she gets too upset if she hurts me!
DS2 has started doing that annoying slap - like thing, where they turn their head and come off suddenly without loosening suction. Ouch!
He also has this habit of grabbing my boob/nipple, pulling it out, inspecting it, then shoving it back in his mouth. I am keeping his nails pretty short until he grows out of that one!!
Just wanted to drop in quickly and say that our bf is still going well, Mack is still chunking up (not chucking), and is looking so much like he wants our food, that TODAY we started him on cereal! He thougt it was okay, but wanted bb fairly quickly. :)
Night feeds. I until recently I never counted or documented number of feeds or times etc for Ds but I found an app and have been recording feeds trying to work out what is happening and if I can reduce any night feeds. DS is 10.5 months, bf and eats reasonable amount of solids. He reacts to dairy if he or I eat it, and so I limit it in my diet and don't offer it to him. Recently started both of us with rice milk, cos it looks like the intolerance might hang around for awhile. ( DD also sensitive to dairy but grew out of it earlier).
So, tonight he is feeding every 90 minutes and feeds for 5-8 minutes, which is similar to his day feeds. So, I assume he is gettin g a full feed, and he be waking from thirst of hunger? his weight is fine, he has droppeddown the charts but DD did similar, and he was born quite big.
DD also
DD also had frequent night feeds until 15 months, but I wouldn't mind it if DS had fewer sooner. why do other kids sleep longer?
I am thinking about leaving ds with dh and some expressed milk so I can try to have a decent block of sleep, but don't know how sccessfully that will be for either of us.
Also thinking about moving DS into DD s room in a few months and possibly into the same bed. But need him to be sleeping longer first.
Any thoughts, encouragement will be welcome.
Congrats T on 6 months of breastfeeding too!
DS2 has dropped his night feeds almost completely. Sometimes he'll have one around midnight, or around 4am, but generally he's sleeping through now.
He however has been having more and more bottle and solids, and less and less boob :(
If he so much as hears you putting together the bottle, it's pretty hard to get him to have any boob, and sometimes he outright refuses, and won't drink at all from me - just keeps looking for and straining to get the bottle.
And some mornings he doesn't want want boob at all ...
Good morning, weaning :(
I don't know HotI. Neither of my kids could go without till 18+ months. DS I night weaned at 14 months and we had to feed him food in the night! Silly :shakehead:, DD I didn't bother till she showed signs she could go without - about 18 months.
I'm hoping to move her out soon - she's nearly 2 and sleeps 8-9 hours straight some nights now. So we're getting there. :dunno:
 peanutter You've come a long way
DD2 is almost the same age and I have just started putting her in her own room to sleep, mostly because we tend to disturb her when we go to bed. Also because she really wants to sleep on her tummy and couldn't do that in her hammock. So we went from pretty much cosleeping most of the night with however many bfs she wanted to separate rooms (can't bring myself to take down the hammock yet :(). I sleep through bfs while cosleeping, so wasn't sure how she'd go.
Since I moved her, she's woken up and come into bed with us every night, but she's only doing it once and sometimes not until about 4am. Once she went all the way to 6am. Sometimes she doesn't resettle with us, so I put her back in her own bed. My baby is growing up too fast. :(
But then some nights she's less settled and I'm sure she's bfing more often because she's in with me most of the night.
I tried to do what you do Jen, and just let DD bf all night, or atleast had the boob out all night and she could get on and off as she wanted. (alot younger than yours I know), but I felt I didn't sleep well at all, felt I was always feeding her, because she would still wake me up when she started sucking, so it felt like it was constantly all night, when it probably wasnt...I get way more rest sitting up and feeding and then laying back down again when done.
amazing how one thing works for someone but not for others.
T, I think it depends on how soundly you sleep and how long you've done it for. After bfing DD1 for four years, I think bfing just became part of my early morning sleep pattern. I think (although I have nothing but a feeling to base this on!) that the younger the baby the more likely you are to be alert/wakeful too. Now I don't worry about DD2 getting stuck between us or accidentally letting her roll out of bed so I think I sleep more soundly.
I'm also quite a deep sleeper and find sleeping comes very quickly and easily, so even if I am disturbed, it is momentary.
Bub will naturally bf less as they get older, your DD is still little!
you are right, I think the age thing is it. it might work again when she is older, even now is easer than a month ago in terms of cosleeping and bf and feeling comfortable.
also, I still squirt all over the place...even in the boob no feeding, really strong let down. so we do end up in a puddle of milk unless I pad myself up heaps
Really is amazing. I would be a zombie by now if I was still trying to sit up to feed. I think DD (4months) still wakes me most feeds overnight but I'm usually back asleep very fast. I'm not sure SHE actually wakes mind you as I usually switch sides and latch her back on at the first sign of a wriggle. She effectively gets a long string of dream feeds. Bed sharing was definitely the best thing for our sleep and BFing.
I've never been much of a cosleeper, I sleep too lightly and so wake at every little movement. I can feed laying down on one side but not the other and manage a light doze but its more wake than sleep when I do.
I think I'm going to set a timeframe for weaning - I've reached the point where I'm over it. Over having him so dependent on me, especially for sleep and I want to be able to leave him with DH occasionally or even have a sleep in past 5am...
I'm ready to stop now, but why do I feel that little bit selfish about it?
Perhaps you're not quite ready CK? It does all get easier as they move into the second year and he's probably at an age now when he can go without you if need be, so you might be able to work some compromises as you move toward weaning, if you want.
And when did he turn one!?
I completely get you CK, I have moments of being well and truly over it and annoyed at the fact I'm the only one who can get DD to sleep at night. One day I'll want to actually do something adult at night, it's been 18 months!!
Just recently though, DD has become a complete Daddy's girl. I swear if he had the boobs I'd be completely unnecessary in this family! So now after DD's bath, she has quiet play with Daddy. He reads to her and gets her to lie on her little couch in the lounge. It's gradually getting to the point that she's getting sleepy there. Last night he did the same with her in her cot but that was much less successful. So our plan is, one Friday or Saturday night when we have nothing on the next day, he'll spend the night with her til she's asleep. Or until she gets upset and needs me or it gets too late with no sign of sleep. We figure this is the gentlest way to handle it.
Not sure if this appeals to you or if your DS is ready, but thought I'd share our plans for you :)
CK, maybe night weaning is something you could try and that would help?
I night weaned DD1 at 16 mths as she was mucking around too much after bfing and keeping us up! Cutting her bfs to just a few worked for us during the day and she kept going for another 2 1/2 yrs!
DS2 has started biting my boobies.
If it doesn't stop, I might stop resisting him weaning, which he's awful close to anyway.
Night weaning - maybe. I started trying to night wean at one point, offering sippy cups of water instead or just cuddles until he went back to sleep, but then he started teething and went right off his food because of it, so the night weaning fell by the wayside because he was actually hungry.
I'm not sure if I'm ready to wean completely to be honest. Not yet, but soon. If I can maybe cut it back to first thing in the morning and last thing before bed it I think I'd be okay. The biggest thing for me I think would be having him let DH put him to bed after his feed without it resulting in hysterical crying. It's tearing both me and DH apart.
