If you let her drink when she wants, she'll get what she needs :)
Ok thanks for the info OP, that does make sense.
The poor thing has been out of sorts with the weather and teething, so I didn't want her to be hungry too. I shall just have my bb's on stand by ready for her beck and call!! :)
Oh and if I'm giving her milk, will she need a cup? Or I should be enough right?
Yep, you are enough. Remember to keep your fluids up too.
from what I have read, the first milk is more watery and quenches thirst, then the milk after let down is the creamer and satisfys hunger (gets thicker and creamer as the feed progresses). so what bubs tend to do is feed more often, but less, often they just have a few sucks and come off before letdown (or as letdown) so they are just having lots of little drinks itms. (im sure someone else will have more to add)
Fat globules get stuck in the ducts and flushed down with successive letdowns, so the fat content increases throughout the feed. That's the only thing that really changes - not the sugar or water content, just the fat content increasing (if that makes sense).
What we know from research is that regardless of whether your baby has lots of small feeds or fewer larger feeds, they get the same amount of fat in the end. So, if your baby is healthy and going well, you can simply feed them when they ask for it and they will get what they need.
Gratuitous whinge warning!!
Owwwww, my boobs hurt. DS feeding feels like he's rubbing sandpaper on my nipples and they ache all.the.damn.time! How on earth do people survive feeding in the early weeks of pregnancy?
Oh cranky kitten,
Feeding isn't supposed to hurt, there could be something unusual going on (like his attachment/latch, or maybe thrush or something.) someone here might have a good idea. Or PM Barb (she's a lactation consultant.)
Hugs, and hoping its better soon.
Cranky kitten - I know the feeling, I only lasted until 9 weeks pg while feeding ds1 still (at least it was just the bedtime feed at that stage and he was over 2)
Yeah, it does hurt! DS was a lot older when I was pg with DD and I cut his feeds short - he was only feeding quite infrequently, too. By 9-10 weeks he just stopped asking. The IVF drugs cut my supply right out, so there was no milk that whole time!
i fed through pregnancy, only one day towards the end that DD decided not to feed but she was back at it the next day. the first tri was the worst for sensitivity, it got better after that. I later had nursing aversion, but that is something different.
hope it eases for you soon.
Oh no you ladies have ruined my dreams! Lol
I had envisioned feeding dd through to the next one being born to minimize my early feeding issues for the next one. Looks like I will have to be prepared for pain regardless ha!
i was hoping that too little_o!! and now you have me concerned MadB re ivf drigs. is that common to dry up?
estrogen affects supply. It depends on what kind of cycle you do, where your supply is and your personal biology.
I did an HRT FET, so lots of estrogen, and DS was only feeding every other day or so, so supply was VERY low to begin with. If you do a stimulated cycle, you'll likely have similar issues, as all those follicles will lift estrogen levels significantly.
Definitely think he's not getting as much - he asked for a drink of water straight after a bf. Ah well, guess we'll play it by ear.
Cranky kitty: my mum said that when he got pg with my 2nd brother, my eldest brother wasnt interested in her milk anymore. Could it have changed back to colostrum already?
It doesn't change to colostrum till 2nd half of pg, but the volume can drop in 1st tri
Sorry Little O - but would it help if I told you the early days for me were a breeze other than one little tiny blister?
Yes on other hand, early days were a lot harder for me. Couldn't even dry them with a towel for 3 months.
First things first, little o. Next time things will most likely be completely different
Yes that's what I'm thinking, easier 2nd time around. I now know what I'm doing, and have a few tips to try if it isn't working out.
Yeah I keep telling myself the same. The thing is I wouldn't change bfing her despite all the issues. In helping to sustain that little life and even my prosthetic attachments (as SIL calls them lol) can't diminish that :)
DS2 didn't want any milk this evening ... he wanted to play, he wanted to kiss, he wanted to bongo-drum, he didn't want any milk
10 months is good. 10 months is good. 10 months is good. 10 months is good. 10 months is good.
I am the sad.
10 months of nourishing your baby with your milk is an awesome effort. Add in caring for a toddler and partner and working long hours it is an admirable feat.
Celebrate your achievements Peanutter :birthday2:
10 months is very good!
I'm glad you hear you have a positive perspective on things little o
Thanks girls.
He had a tiny slurp this morning but nothing substantial and he was more interested in getting my cup of water.
I think we're done.
I haven't made it to 12 months which was my goal, but I did get to 6 months exclusive and 10 months over all.
Some babies are just ready earlier, P. What can you do, force him? No. You have done wonderfully! I am constantly amazed at your efforts.
Just thing - soon you won't need to express at work anymore! That must be a relief.
 it is ok to feel sad.
Thanks hun.
Peanutter could it just be a nursing strike? I have heard these are common around 9-10 months? All you can do is keep offering
Peanutter - Im having the same issue with Violet. She nurses more than that but is drastically cutting down and its just more of a struggle to get her to nurse lately. I have a feeeling she wont be a long nurser which makes me sad because I envisioned much mroe time with her like this :(
10 months is fabulous. Really! But unlikely that he is weaning at this age. Stick with it (sticking with it is 90% of success!) Always offer - never be offended. Don’t vary your routine (except to offer more feeds) Don’t offer bottles (or extra bottles if he is having them already) Set your body language to “whatever, but it’s good stuff - your loss!" It can start to be a battle of wills at this age. 10-12mnths can be an age when babies are less interested, but they usually don’t wean, and come back to it in their own time
I'm so excited - after one year of bfing DD2 she's finally started feeding to sleep! Since birth, she must have been the only baby ever born who never fed to sleep. Didn't help that she only feeds for about five minutes. She has finally decided she likes comfort sucking and is asking for a bf when we hop onto her bed. Much quicker and easier than patting to sleep!
Might have something to do with her need to reconnect as she becomes more independent, but whatever it is I am enjoying it. Going to sleep is quicker and snugglier. ;) Why on earth do people tell mums not to feed to sleep?
Yay! I trained DD to feed to sleep at around 3 months, as she stopped just sleeping and hated being held.
I know Jennifer, I've never understood it! Dd loves feeding to sleep:)
It's the best way IMO, your both relaxed and snugly
I miss it sometimes. But something had to give with the horrible sensation it gave me.
DS has only had 2 feeds so far today, his early hours of the morning one and his nap time one. He'll likely have one before bed and that'll be it for the day - he's definitely responding to the drop in my supply. Ah well, I was thinking about weaning him anyway.
thats great Jen. it is so much easier to just whoop (and it is whoop in my case) a boob out to settle them.
speaking of which ive just bf Spock to sleep. took ages but only cause she kept doing this weird thing and kept making me laugh.. its hard to explain...but its like she was trying to inhale my whole boob.. she would be attached sucking and then she would open her mouth even wifer and suck with full force and heaps of breast tissue would end up in her mouth. it really ticked. would that have just been her playing? cause im sure she was attched properly before she did that.
I tried hand expressing a bit to get him interests earlier and almost nothing came out. I think we're done. But I'm proud of getting this far :)
