    Change in DD's poo

DD is usually fed on bm at the breast topped up with formula. She's now 6 months old and earlier this week she was only taking half her formula. I called the mchn line and the nurse thought she had a bit if gastro and advised hydrolite and a lactose free formula.
DD's poo's have always been runny and I thought it was just normal with the original formula but with the lactose free formula it's like smooth peanut butter.
What consistency should poo be? She gets about 80% of her food from formula. It's also more brown now. Before it was more green.
What colour and consistency is/ was your babies poo at this age?
I'm wondering if she's a bit lactose intolerant.

    Change in DD's poo

My DD's (also 6 months) poo is green 95% of the time and is runny. She is fully breastfed.

There is a huge variety of normal for poo... DS's is like peanut butter, yeah. Sometimes really watery though, sometimes chunky and bitsty, like mustard.

Don't forget she's also started on solids recently which will also have an impact.

    Same as my DDs....

Given your LO is eating food and you have changed formula I'd say the change in poo is more because of those two things

    Change in DD's poo

Thanks guys. I guess I'm trying to work out if she's lactose intolerant from her poo and whether I can put her back on the original formula, which I prefer cause its organic.

FL, DS's poo was pretty runny, on his combination of 50% formula and 50% BM. Now that he's on solids as well, but taking less formula, it's more peanut butter-like. colour now depends on what he's been eating - we can even identify pumpkin and zucchini in his nappy. I have been consistently advised that there is no 'normal' for babies poo, and anywhere from runny to paste-like is fine - you just don't want pellets. No-one can tell me what's usual in a BF/FF combination baby either, because most people do one or the other, but as a rule BF babies have runnier poo and FF babies tend more towards the solid poo.

Did you see any other signs which suggest lactose intolerance? I would go back to the original formula for a week or two and see if there is any difference, but if poo colour and consistency is the only sign, I wouldn't worry at all.

Thanks Phoil. We are in a very similar position so I really appreciate your input.
She's not showing signs of pain or other issues so its gonna be trial and error and I think I'll go and see our MCHN too.

Yes, I feel a special kinship with you. Three cheers for the combination feeding Mamas!

Yeah, with no signs of other distress/discomfort, I think I'd be really questioning the lactose-intolerant diagnosis. I think people jump to that conclusion very easily to explain any little perceived anomaly, and it's possibly overused.

Yeah good point hon. I'll try her on the original organic formula and see what happens. There's about a days worth of the lactose free left so I'm still deciding whether to go back to the old and save the lactose free or finish the lactose free first.
And I feel like we're that third caragory cause we breast and bottle feed :-)
