After a few issues and me returning to work I decided to wean dd. I had already been topping up with formula for all but one feed (morning 7am) as this feed was the only feed she would take. And eventually I was only breastfeeding the one feed at 7am. Anyway so I haven't breastfed for over 2 weeks now and once I stopped it was fine. My right side got a little full so i expressed 20 mls just for comfort. Still good after that, they seemed to be going down. But now after 2 weeks all of a sudden they are filling up and leaking after showers etc. They have also become increasingly tender. I had a couple of blocked ducts that I massaged out in a hot shower, no fever or anything else. Why do they start making milk weeks after?
I havestarted using cabbage leaves and read that sage tea will help stop milk production. Is there anything else I can do? It's very painful and uncomfortable
I didn't have that happen with the two of mine that weaned, but with the kids who didn't feed from me I just kept expressing for comfort and after about a month they were back to normal.
Thanks Arimeh, hopefully this won't go on. It's very uncomfortable. I hear you can get sage in capsule form, might give that a go if I have no luck.
ETA: I started taking the mini pill just before I dropped all feeds. Took it about 10 days or so, then stopped. I then had a ridiculously light AF that was basically spotting for 7 days. Maybe it has something to do with it??
I have no idea sorry, I haven't been on the pill for 10 years and never went on anything when having the kids (probably why I had 5 kids in under 7 years LOL)
I would suggest continuing to manage things as you have done so far. Milk can stick around for quite a while - it varies enormously. You only need to remove milk if you're getting sore/lumpy etc, otherwise you can just leave it where it is. It will most likely take more than a couple of weeks to totally settle down. If it persists, they you could speak with your health professional.
