    Is this mastitis?

    I feel like crap.
Sudden onset at about 5pm of sore right breast, very painful, bruised feeling, cant even touch it.

I'm in tears now, had the shakes and sat under my dressing gown and blanket with a heat pack and still shivered. DH turned the heating up but I feel awful. I fed A and tried to express which helped a bit but I feel terrible and the shooting pain was almost unbearable

Last night over night A fed more than usual, but was normal today and I felt fine.

I have a headache and my temp is 39.2C...

I'm a nurse, I know I'm not well but I know nothing about boob stuff, had no problems BF MJ for 2 years.

What do I do? Have taken panadiene but that has really had no effect on me or my temp.

    Hi,

Empty your breast - feed your baby as often as possible, and express with a breastpump is you have one or hand express. Apply an ice-pack. Hopefully the panadol will have worked by now - the keys are !. Empty breast
    2 icepack to reduce inflamation.
    Rest
Hope you are better soon - if not head to the Dr first thing for antibiotics

Sounds the same as when I had mastitis Came on in the afternoon and at about 10pm I was shivering like crazy (this was still in the middle of summer!)
I would go to the Dr in the morning if you feel the same and temp still up. For me it started clearing up pretty quite once i started antibiotics. I always fed from the effected side first to make sure it was getting drained and just pumped the other side.

    Hope your feeling better soon

It's awful isn't it Hopefully the breast emptying and ice packs will knock it off but if not antibiotics work really quickly. Hang in there hun

Sounds like it, I have it currently for the third time. I've been alternating nurofen and panadol and I have antibiotics. I also go every day to the docs for ultrasound therapy.
It's awful! I really feel for you. It makes you so sick!

    Thanks for your replies.

Just got back from Drs, have started AB's so hopeful they kick in soon.

Had a terrible morning, vomiting and rigors, temp still above the 39 mark
Lucky A only feeds and sleeps at the moment and isn't a fussy baby.
MJ is in CC today which means I only have one to worry about... Don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow if I still feel this bad

    Thanks again

How are you feeling now, SJ? Nurofen or another anti-inflammatory are probably best as pain relief as they tend to ease inflammation as well (like the ice packs). Hope it's all cleared up.

Thanks Jennifer, almost back to normal. Monday was a killer and I thought I was dying, anti's took about 6 hours to start working and then I started improving.

Yesterday I was dizzy all day and exhausted, and had very painful boobs and let down was toecurling!
Today it's still a bit painful but much more bearable.

I had NO idea you could be so sick with this and didn't expect the nausea and vomiting.

Looking back I have had the start of mastitis, maybe a blocked duct twice since A has been born, but she must have managed to clear it... The rapid onset also caught me off guard.

Thanks everyone for you help, especially loulabelle who offered to have DD1 yesterday xx

That's good to hear. Keep a close eye on any blockages you might get down the track and treat them as you did at the start of the mastitis and hopefully it won't get so bad again.

    Glad you're on the mend.

    Hugs hun,

I know it's late but wanted to send you massive hugs. Mastitis is evil! I felt sick reading your post (must have PTSD from my own bfeeding experiences!).

    Hope it NEVER happens again!
