Miss E, this is one of the really common concerns that mums have. I think you are probably going to get some conflicting advice in this thread.

My experience with DS1, was that he started off only liking a few things - yoghurt, cheese, banana, sandwich and weetbix was pretty much it. Like your DS, he only started having any interest in food at around 8 or 9 months, and even then only ate a very small amount. I was so worried that he wasn't getting enough food that everytime he refused the offered foods, I followed up by giving him one of his favourites. The problem quickly became that he never even bothered trying the other foods because he knew a favourite would always come next.

Babies often need to try something 10 times (or in my experience, even more), before they like it. Part of learning to eat well is trying new foods by touching them, licking them etc well before starting to eat them. It is a normal way for babies to learn and get used to new foods. This is one of the good things about the period up till about 12 months, where the food really is a learning experience and the breastmilk is the main source of nutrition. You can keep offering a new food multiple times until they are used to it, and it doesn't matter that they are not eating it at first.

I know some people disagree with me on this, but after my experience, I suggest that your DH's idea is a good one. If he doesn't eat what's offered, don't offer anything else. Babies do not starve themselves, if they are hungry they do eat. And it doesn't take long for them to figure out that the choice is the first food offered or nothing. Now is a good time to do it as you know he is getting the nutrition he needs from bm.

Also with DS2 I never offered him anything different after the first choice and he has always been a fantastic eater - he loves fruit and vegs - he even asks for peas and carrots for dinner and has seconds of them!

I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear, but it is my experience and what worked for us. GL with it all hun, this can be a very stressful time
