We have been weaning ds off formula onto cows milk since he was about 13 months old. We did 1/4 milk to 3/4 formula and got to 1/2 and 1/2 but things have gone really wrong with his poo. He used to proper formed poos, but now they are horrible runny poo's. They dont smell so its really hard to know that he has done one and as a result he has really bad nappy rash. The colour is very light brown and nothing in it is properly formed.
Has anyone had any experience with poo's going horrible when cows milk was started? He isn't lactose intolerant as he has been on formula for ages and eats cheese and yogurt no problems, just thinking that maybe there is something in cows milk that he finds difficult (or really easy) to digest. We are going back to full time formula for a week to see if the situation improves but just was wondering is anyone else has experienced this.
Thanks for the advice and sorry for all the poo talk lol.
I had a similar thing when transitioning DS1 to cows milk. I was doing the same as you reducing the formula, and increasing the milk, and DS had a few issues with his poops. It took a week or so to settle down, but it did. I did the same as you and went back to formula, thinking he might have had an issue, but did some reading and (I cant remember where) I did read that sometimes the transition to milk can take a week or two to settle wrt poops, so tried again, and he seems to be more normal again...
I did look into intolerances, as DS still does not do formed poops, and will get him investigated eventually, but the public clinic near me had a 6 month waiting list...
Hopefully some of the girls with more knowledge wrt milk/dairy intolerance allergy will drop by...
(ETA - here is my thread on the same issue... might help a little)
When we weaned Ashton to cow's milk, his poo's were never formed. We might have 1 in 100 (well that is what it felt like) that were okayish. It took me 1.5yrs to finally talk my doctor into getting him tested for Lactose Intolerance, in which we discovered he is both Lactose and Fructose Intolerant.
We had a similar problem. My daughter was tested for an intolerance to the protein in milk and was positive. But interestingly enough we don't have the same problem with A2 milk. It has a different protein and she is fine with it. It is a bit more $$ but anything to stop the runny poo!
Rufalina: This has been going on for over a month now and is getting progressively worse so im not sure that it will sort itself out in its own. We have gone back to formula today so see what happens.
Astrolady: That is ridiculous re: your doc. Im not sure that it is lactose intolerance as he has never had a prob with formula but guess it wouldn't hurt to check it out.
Junglemum: Thats interesting about the protein in milk. DH did mention trying A2 milk see if that makes a difference. Think i will just go see the gp and see what he says. Prob worth checking out.
We use A2 milk for DD and have not had any problems (even when we 1st switched her over from formula), but on the odd occasion she does have normal milk, she does get a bit upset tummy, ligher coloured poop, and a bit runny..
Hmmm, my ds is having poo issues also, sounds similar. After reading you post it only clicked that his poos have changed since starting daycare. He is having cows milk at day care and breastfed at home with the occassional cows chucked in. My thread is here. May just be the cows milk. I have not noticed any improvement after cutting back his fruit intake i might add.
