    Shellfish (prawns) and breast milk

I've avoided all shellfish while breastfeeding basically because the midwife who taught the breastfeeding class I attended at Frances Perry told us too. She never really said why. Now I'm craving prawns - what do you think - can I have some?

I ate them when I was breastfeeding.
I know they are a listeria risk when you are pregnant. I have no idea why they would be off the menu when BFing.

Go for your life - have a nice big serve of garlic prawns (or however yo fancy them) The good news is you can eat whatever you like when you are breastfeeding. The only time you might think twice is if there is a family allergy towards a particular food

My sons both have an allergy to shellfish. Kind of helps that I do too - so there was none of that (nor nuts) when BF. Otherwise as Barb said - no reason not to!

Oh very interesting! I was about to ask a similar question...

Dh is allergic to fish - an allergy that he didnt have until last year.

I just ate fish, a prawn and calamari. What should I look out for? For dh his tongue tingled and has difficulty swallowing, depending on severity...

hmmm....i dunno, i thought it would be fine if you were breastfeeding, but not if you were pregnant......so does that mean that technically you shouldn't eat peanut butter and stuff if your BF in case baby reacts? i never though of it that way!

Well, your dh didn't have it til last year - stop stressing. Sounds like a nice lunch! Pretty much you can eat what you please when breastfeeding
