I'm currently pregnant with my first baby, i am planning on breastfeeding but have also been considering expressing and using bottles as well to make it easier for babysitting daycare etc. There are soooooooo many brands and different pumps, shapes and colic systems out there at the moment that i'm a little lost as to what brand to pick and would love to hear peoples opinions. At the moment i'm thinking of either going Avent or Nuk
Meaka, it is pretty confusing, isn't it! I was given bottles before DS1 was born, and if I would have bought some otherwise. Then I ended up with two babies that just weren't bottle drinkers. They both started on sippy cups early as I had to return to work and bottles weren't going to cut it.
What I'm trying to say is that it might be an idea to hold off on the bottles for now and see what happens. There are differences in the teats, but in many cases babies will either drink from a bottle or not and the brand is not so important. You can buy bottles anywhere later on if you need them. In the first few weeks trying to add expressing into the mix can be a lot of added pressure for a new mum and can make it harder to get a pattern going. Also giving bottles to a baby in the first few weeks can make it harder to establish breastfeeding. In cases where expressed milk or artificial milk needs to be given in the first weeks, doing so with a cup, spoon or syringe is a better idea.
When and if you do decided to buy bottles, I would make sure they are BPA free.
I can't comment on breastfeeding and pumps, but can on bottles.
We like our Avent bottles...the normal, cheap bottles with the normal long teats (rather than thw wide style avent ones) gave P horrible, horrible wind.
They will leak though if the top is screwed on too tight....hence you have to remember to tell carers, babysitters and etc to loosen it slightly before using them.
We use Tomee Tipee and find them great. I thought I was going to use Avent and had about 4 of these bottles and have never ever used them. I like the TT ones because they are really lightweight and seem more breast like in my opinion. That was really important to me as I am BF and bottle feeding.
I agree with MR - hold off on buying....well at least hold off on buying too many. Maybe have one or two different styles or note down any recommendations for later on. It's kinda individual for each baby I think. Neither of my girls would take any teat/bottle (staunch booby lovers) and DS went through all different kinds till he found the one he liked
I also agree to hold off till you work out what you want/can do.
DS and I like the medela bottles only cause they go straight onto our pump (medela swing) but if you are looking at a different pump then I would suggest you buy the bottles that attach straight to that one.
My lactation consultant reccomended pidgeon bottles with the pidgeon perstaltic (sp?) teats. We had to comp feed due to supply issues from birth. So if you were going to buy 1 or 2, possibly those ones. But don't buy a heap, as every baby is different.
But I would suggest having one on hand - we didn't have any bottles prior to birth as I expected to fully breastfeed. However, we had to comp feed on medical advice and we had NO idea what to get initially so sent 2 childless friends to Coles and they bought 1 each of 4 different kinds of bottles - and then the lactation consultant said they were all rubbish! LOL - so money down the drain.
Once DS had refused the breast at 3 months, we switched to Avent - and used them happily till 1 year.
Meaka - my plans are very similar to yours. I'm 10 weeks away from my due date and have decided to hold off buying bottles until I see how it goes (based on advice received on bellybelly and other sites). A friend in the US recommended Dr Brown's bottles. I would love to hear if anyone knows anything about them. Also, (for me) the bottles must be BPA-free and free of all that other "bad stuff". Usually, if they are, they advertise it as many people are concerned these days.
