    Exclamation Is Yogurt OK?

    Hi All,

Just wondering what the current beliefs are about babies and yogurt/cheese.
I know cow's milk is something to hold off giving until 12 months but yogurt and cheese are ok?
DS#3 is 7 months old and I'm thinking of starting some pot set natural yogurt with him but have found that the advice can be conflicting and confusing!

Hi there, like everything there are loads of different ideas. I didn't give ds yogurt until he was 12 months old and even then it was an organic goats milk yoghurt and only on the odd occasion as it isn't something that is always in our fridge. And I still don't give him cows milk as he's still breastfeeding. I don't believe dairy is as necessary as the dairy industry would have you believe and there is plenty of research to suggest that it isn't that great for your health. My son is 2 years old and when he weens I may introduce some raw biodynamic milk for milkshakes & smoothies and home made icecream etc but that will again only be every now and again along with home make yoghurt made with the raw milk. As for cheese this is something that we all really enjoy so my son started eating that at about 12 months. Each to their own, do whatever is right for you. I would always recommend to cut out dairy if your child has a cold as it's mucus forming and an immune system suppressant.

I introduced dairy and cheese around 7 months, my DS2 loves it and has had no issues with it. It was recommended as ok by my mchn. He just has the kids yoghurt that I buy for DS1 (ie the Wiggles/Dora) nothing special We don't have any history of dairy intolerances though, I may have held off if we did.

I introduced DS1 to yoghurt at about the 9-10 month mark. Just plain, natural yogurt, unsweetened, which he was happy to eat at that age. I'm wary of the "kids" yoghurts as I think they tend to have more sugar in them, and it's a bit of a marketing gimmick anyway. A good quality pot-set yoghurt with active bacteria thingies (like Jalna) is a good place to start.

We introduced DD to yogurt somewhere around 8-10 months (can't remember when). Cheese was prob around then too. I had read somewhere it was a recommended food around then - obviously there are lots of different recommendations though.

how do you give cheese to a bub that young, without it being a choking hazard? I'm curious. Does it mean you cut it up into tiny thin slices? I thought you needed teeth to masticate it up, otherwise wouldn't the cheese just stick to the roof of the mouth? Or does cheese "dissolve" with saliva?
