I have not read all the responses...sorry.
But did want to share, I never BF DS1 past 4weeks....so was very happy to go so well with DS2 (18months almost self weaned). From about 4months he started waking every 2hrs, sometimes more often exhausting me. My Mum's comment on the phone one day "don't you wish you hadn't BF now"? errrrrrrrrrr, ummmmmmm "don't you wish you thought before you spoke"??

Well I must say it has been interesting reading all the responses! It is sad that people actually believe these to be 'reasons' to stop breastfeeding.
I have been told 'once they start solids', 'once they have teeth', 'once they can ask for it', 'sleep better on formula' (mind you DS slept for 10hrs straight at 10weeks) but this last one that prompted the thread was told to DH. Thankfully he is fully supportive and told his parents that it was nonsense. They do keep asking DS what he is going to do though when the baby comes, because I can't be feeding two... well I'm pretty sure I can if I want, and he wants... I think they are too scared to say it to me, because I just say that I will feed him for as long as he wants (and to prove a point to them!)
to all... comments like these just make me want to ensure my breastfeeding relationship with my child(ren) is stronger than ever

My SIL (supposedly pro-BF) told me, before i had kids, that BF a child that can ask for it is wrong, BF a child that can walk up and try and help themselves is wrong, and it shouldn't happen. you HAVE to wean them early so you dont have that sort of thing happen.
Waiting for her to say it to me now. i think i am like Kim with the "don't mess with my feeding" look. no one tries. well, except the doctor, who seemed to think weaning would cure PCOS and sleep apnea all at once. idiot!

My answer to the when they can ask for it is he's neen able to ask for it since the day he was born. OK he didn't say 'Mumma milk' like he does now, but he made what he wanted clear.

I was just at a bulk billing GP who told me its not good for DS emotions and so I need to wean NOW!

hahahaha some of these are just stupid...
Ive had people comment about feeding, him having teeth, getting 'too big', me not being able to drink, etc etc. But no one has gone on to suggest I should wean because of it. If they did, they would soon learn my opinion on weaning before DS wants to wean. I find myself unable to shut up when there's a point I need to make!!! DP is so supportive of BF, when it comes to people making comments, he's quick to shoot them down too!!

Oh, and another one - I was going to Hong Kong for work for 10 days, and I was lamenting that the last of my feeding days might be over (long story, but it physically was barely happening by that time, despite the best of efforts) and they basically said that babies didn't need breastmilk after the first 6 days, because they don't get any benefit after that time...
Oh - and then there's the MCHN at my local, whose motto is "Breast is best. Bottle is better."

The health nurse at DD's six month checkup told me a long "scary" story about a lady who rang a radio station because she couldn't fall asleep without something in her mouth.
She then explained to me that this lady was obviously breastfed too long (wtf?!?!) and that I should wean straight away.
Riiiiiiiight.
