I've made an appointment to see my GP this afternoon, I am sick of self diagnosing stuff. I saw a lactation consultant last week who says that our latching on is perfect but my nipples just don't seem to be healing like they should. I want this fixed! Breast feeding should not be this hard!
no, it shouldn't be, huh? That's what I thought with DD after having continuously BF for 3.5 years when I got my first thrush bout!
In fact, I have another bout now that I am treating with Daktarin gel - the gel doesn't have to be wiped off before feeds, the cream does. There's also the oral drops (1ml per dose) for bub's mouth.
Shiny means thrush...just before they start peeling and them if you leave it, they begin to crack
It will clear up soon and wonder what it was all about
Went to my Gp today and she says that she can't believe that I have been feeding through the holes that are in my nipples (still haven't healed). She says that she's seen women give up breast feeding completely with less damage than what I have.
EEKK. She wants me to just express my BM until they have healed and has given me an antifungal/antibiotic cream to treat them with. I feel a bit weird about doing this as I really don't want my supply to go down. Thankfully the left nipple isn't as bad as the right one and I might just feed from the left, get the right healed and see how we go.
She also made it clear that I am not a failure if I have to give up BF. I made it clear to her that I would NOT be giving up BF and that I will get these nipples healed if it's the last thing I do.
Im glad you have been to the Dr and got some cream to help treat your poor battered nipples. I so agree about breast feeding shouldn't be this hard but it's ceratinly not easy in the first few weeks is it. Good on you for persisting with it, your doing a wonderful job and little Evie is thriving too.

Yep, sometimes our babies need us to just be bloody-minded about our determination to keep them on breastmilk! When you just know you have to and that these situations CAN be overcome, you just power through them until they're resolved.

Even if you express for the next 24 hours you'll find your nipples feel a lot better in that period and your 'better' nipple will probably handle a couple of feeds by tomorrow night. Your supply will not evaporate. It may actually cause some engorgement, so make sure you get into the shower to massage your ducts with hot water to get the supply moving and the message to your glands that you still need that milk to be produced.
I think most of us know people who give up on BFing with far less reason...usually because there wasn't a sheer bloody-mindedness to begin with.
Hey, I survived nipple damage with Tongue Tie with DS, and undiagnosed thrush with DD for about 2 weeks adn she's now 6 months old and still feeding (he he, so is DS...just)!
