    Dairy allergy mums out there??

    Long story short ~ Cut lots of foods out while bfing from 8 weeks. had a changed baby. Main intollerances (allergy test yet to come but family history strong in allergies) are tomatoes/sauce; egg and dairy (not lactose; it's dairy proteins). If i have a small amount i end up with a baby screaming in pain approx 9 hours (6 to get to my milk; three after he feeds) after eating those foods.

    Went to doc today to find out why i'm losing weight (very underweight, think lack of dairy fats in my diet cuz i used to eat a lot is the main cause); had a fill in doc today from regular. he didn't believe me that babies can be affected by dairy proteins thru breast milk. said yes its possible for chemicals/antibiotics; and tomato acid and even egg proteins but impossible for dairy. need some more mums out there and some encouragement. i know my son is intollerent to these and i know this doctor is wrong; guess i just need some mums out there who is going thru the same thing!!

    he has referred me to a paediatrician; so i guess i'm just worried that i now have to keep defending myself to these doctors who have never met me or my son before and think that i am wrong!?!....meanwhile i still am losing weight and dont know what to do.

    Hi hun,

    I believe I had dairy intollerant children too. I never had them diagnosed from a doc, it was all based on trial and error from my part. My DD was never fully bf, and she was aboe to stomach dairy based formulas, but when it came to putting her onto dairy, she got terrible recurrant ear infections. We cut out dairy and she was fine. With DS he was fully bf and for about 7mths I didn't have dairy at all because it upset his little tum so much. He would be really windy and get a sore tummy (pulling leg up and screaming alot) many a sleepless night was had until I figured out what was causing it. He is 2 1/2 now and while he can have some dairy, alot will give him the runs. He drinks alot of milk so he has soy, though can stomach a tub of yogurt a day and a little cheese, though he doesn't like it much. I was also intollerant to dairy as a bub and had soy formula and milk until I was about 3ish. Even now if I have a lot I get tummy and wind pains for a day or so.

    As for your weight loss, are you eating a high kj diet? So full fat foods, things high in healthy fats, like nuts seeds, avocado...things high in kj. I don't know too much about it, but it might be a good idea to go to a dietitian/nutritionist to help with a diet plan. You will need to be healthy to make milk for your bub and have energy for yourself!

    Hi hun,

    Quick reply as getting ready to go out, but yep indeedy the cow's milk protein travels through BM. My DS is allergic to dairy and soy (apparently the protein is similar) and if I eat it he gets mucousy poos.

    Re your weight (I have lost lots too). Lots of good fats - avocado, olive oil. I have lots of hot chips and scallops (not the healthiest but given I can't eat so much I don't worry). Lots of lean meat too.

    I've never had a health professional question this. Stand your ground!

    Hugs!

    Thanks so much for your replies....
    I've never had any allergies to foods myself as a child (although debateable because i've had severe thrush since primary school which in a 'natural medicine' side of the fence is still an allergy.); but my mum and sister have some food allergies. so having to cut out alot of foods myself was very hard especially dairy as i consumed ALOT! As for kj's i dont count but i eat a main meal three times a day (meat and vege or meat and salad or rice and pasta (lots of carbs!) plus lots of hot chips and things like that also (cuz yes i agree theres not alot i can eat and i need any fat i can get! haha). i am constantly snacking on anything (junk or non junk). my diet is probably the healthiest it has ever been in terms of eating meat and vegies and fruit etc because alot of processed food all has milk powder or things in it. my ds has no problems with weight. was born over 8lb and has always put on tonnes of weight (he is in 75%)....so i know he is nice and healthy. makes me think that i'm still not eating enough because he is taking soo much out of me...but two other docs (one being my regular) said that bf shouldnt affect me that much?!

    back on the dairy thing....good to know that dairy proteins can go to BM and i am not crazy!! {or hallucinating the last 8 months}

    A great book to read is Bryan Vartabedian's "Colic solved" which talks a lot about dairy protein allergy. Bryan is a paediactrician in the USA. You can get it trough www.mothersdirect.com.au (I only say that because you may not get it anywhere else!) It's always good to turn it back, and ask 'why?' Why does he think other chemicals and proteins can go through into breastmilk, but not dairy protein?
    Re diet, good oils, like olive oil on your bread, on your salad etc are good. And avacado. It would be worth seeing a dietician to check out what you can eat - it's hard work looking after a small child when you are hungry all the time
