DD2 is just over 12 months. She still feeds lots, i guess four plus times a day and all night from between 4 hourly to every hour. But eats lots of solids too.
I have recently changed my eating habits drastically, i have been on a few diets since she was born but i have just cut out all sugar and processed foods. I have been watching my potions too. but i thought eating enough.
I have lost 5 kgs and about 6cms so clearly my intake is less.
My problem is im pretty sure that my milk supply is suffering, i dont feel full and dont look full and when i tried to express a little i found it very hard to get a few mls, even though normally it squirts everywhere (TMI )
I know these things dont necessarily mean my milk is low. I dont want to stop breastfeeding yet so want to get my milk back up again. Ive eaten more today, a few extra snacks between meals but still feel the same, dont know how long it would take to increase.
wondering if anyone had any advice/personal experiences they could share.
No expert advice here but could you maybe offer an extra feed for the next couple of days to build up your supply? I had friends that dieted and did extreme exercise and didn't have a problem with BF so hopefully it's just an adjustment thing. I'm sure someone will be able to give you some great advice, sorry I couldn't help.
I don't eat any sugar or processed foods and have a giant baby, so I'm assuming the supply is ok. When I switched to this diet ds was still young, but at twelve months he would feed similar to your dd.
Try eating oats for breakfast. I make porridge then mix in natural yogurt and some nuts or seeds.
Up your protein, so I have tuna or beans or lentils for lunch, and often make eggs for breakfast or lunch. I also make hommus as a spread alternative to butter (high in protein and low in fat)
Increase natural fats like avocado, or even try nut butters.
You want to make sure your food is really nutritious, even if the portions are small. I think this is the age where supply can drop because baby learns to comfort feed without drawing any milk (ds does that anyway).
Just keep offering and your supply should even out. Hth
Arcadia, (typed a reply the other day and got distracted and didnt send it sorry!) thanks so much. sounds like we both have the exact same breakfast!! yummy isnt it! i am loosely following the CSIRO total well being plan which is high protein but will just try increasing the natural fats a bit like you suggested. might try knocking up a hommus too!!! yum
It could be totally possible that even though she is feeding alot she isnt actually drawing much milk, that makes me feel a bit better.
Thanks again for the reply!!
It's unlikely your diet will affect supply. but if your baby is eating more solids she will most likely be taking less milk, which will reduce your supply accordingly.
Also, at this stage your breassts may never feel full and you probably will have problems expressing if you've not been doing it regularly.
