I am sorry to hear that you have mastitis I had a terrible bout that started when DS2 was 5 days old. Unfortunately I ended up on antibiotics because my temp was over 40, and I was hallucinating.
However, I once averted a bout of mastitis - when DS1 was a newborn - by using poke root cream (applied to the breast) and a homeopathic remedy called phytolacca (which comes in pilule form). I was able to get these at my local health food shop.
The basic treatment is same as for a blocked duct - most of the time that's what causes mastitis. Have you been engorged? Any issues with baby's feeding that may mean she's not draining the breast well?
Try and put your bubbas chin towards the lump when feeding. I also did warm compress prior to feeding and ice packs after feeding. Make sure you get lots of rest. Look after yourself and feel better soon
Hugs hun. Had it 4 times last time so I know your pain!
When I was in hospital with it, they told me to take nurofen as it helps bring the swelling down (which gets the milk moving again). If feeding is really painful, you can also have panandol (different drugs so ok to take at the same time).
You can also get ultrasound by a physiotherapist who is experienced in this. It helps to break up the blockages.
You might find ice packs after a feed comforting.
Cabbage leaves in your bra (washed) can also be comforting and help reduce engorgement.
If your baby is that new, can you call the maternity ward and get some help (or even go back in for one of the drs to prescribe abx?)? I know with my hospital up to a certain point you could still go back in.
Finally, go to bed and stay there! Rest is soooo important with mastitis. Have someone bring you the baby for feeds, and just rest the remainder of the time.
GL hun - hope you're feeling much better soon xoxo
Sorry I have had a bit of trouble replying (computer issues "DH refusing to share computer!")
Im feeling much better now. Seems to have almost gone, which is great because I was running out of things to try before going to the drs!
MadB- I was definately engorged. I was red, raised skin, lumpy, the whole bit. Last time it got that bad I had to get a script from the dr.
I ended up going to bed early. I spent the next day in bed, with heat packs, pain relief and the rest. DD3 has been feeding up a storm on it. Ive paid extra attention to her position when feeding, she has no problem feeding on it which is great, and slowly it seems to be getting better. Im still a little tender but Im definately feeling much better.
