    Question Oral Gel on Nipples?

    Hi ladies,

Just another question. I went to visit an LC at the hospital where my son was born as I had been having shooting pains in my left breast so just wanted to check it out. She said she couldn't see any sign of thrush, but some of the symptoms did let her think that I might be suffering from it. She told me to go to the chemist and buy Diflocan 1 and some Daktarin Oral gel. I took the tablet on Sunday and have been using the gel on and off for a few days. The thing is, I really have not noticed any difference and to be honest, it is like the gel makes the pain worse. Has anybody ever had this trouble before? Was thinking maybe I am allergic or something. Is there anything else you can put on your nipples to help? Am off to my GP tomorrow as I also think I have a bladder infection so will ask her as well. Just wanted to see if any of you had had the same experience.

    hi anita,
when ds was 1+week the nurse suspected that he had thrush because there is a white coated layer on his tounge that is difficult to rub off, so we went through thrush medication for weeks and weeks (although i dont have any symptoms at all). he took nilstat oral drops and i put dactarin on my nipple.
a couple of weeks later i experienced some shooting pains and i thought i must be getting the thrush symptoms so i had some oral medicine as well, but that doesnt help
what i found later was that i had mastitis (have been having all the symptoms and didnt realise that)
thanks barb for pointing that out

sorry i dont mean to scare you or anything. i just want you to be aware of other symptoms cause it might or might not be thrush.
when i put dactarin i didnt feel anything or any pain, just that its a really sticky gel lol

at the same time, some of my friends mentioned that in the early period BF might be a bit painful and gets better after a while

btw, good attachment can also alleviate the pain

if its thrush, you might want to take some probiotics. good idea on asking the gp
hope this helps and hope the pain goes away soon

    xxx

White tongues?? Jack's tongue always has a whitish coating on it...I heard that it's not uncommon. Errrk...I suppose I should check it out with the ECHN.

    hi mrsr,
as i said before it might or might not be thrush.
lots of babies have that, if you can wipe it then thats fine
but do check with your mchn if that'll put your mind at ease

    Hi Anita
I have had the same thing these past days- nipple thrush and pain. Baby doesn't have the white on her tongue but I had her checked by a GP wo said everyone has the bacteria of thrush but it only becomes thrush when it muliplies out of control. So baby may have it orally but u can't see it and she passes it to you. It is noticable on thenipples as pain, a bright pink colour on the nipples (that 's normally not there), a ring around the nipples and shinyness (sp??) on the nipple. I used Neocare from the chemist which is acidophilus in a rice powder base that u mix with breastmilk, apply to the nipple and let baby suck off. It is gluten free, colour free, chemical free etc etc and is very safe and effective. A LC from the ABA put me onto it. It may need to be ordered. Another natural treatment is Babybiotics but I haven't tried it- from the health food shop.
