Oh no Barb i hope your eczema gets to be nothing like mine. I've just started taking zinc tablets, i'm using a wash from the chemist that is very moisturising and if you get the chance maybe even a soak in the bath and then apply some cream like i was told. I hope it clears up really soon for you.
Thanks for the reasurance also, i hope DD is never effected at all by all that i'm going through. I'm not giving up
EJ,
I'm just wondering if you have tried kenacomb for your nipple problem - it contains an antibiotic, and an antifungal, and some cortisone-like thing - so just maybe it would whack all the problems at the same time.
Hang in there, and hope that you can find some thing that works!
Kate
Thanks for the suggestion Kmn, i haven't heard of kenacomb before it sounds like it could be usefull but the only thing is when i used an actual antifungal cream on the area it made it worse. It made it red, inflamed and weep so i'm a bit hesitant to go back there again. There are a few different things i could probably try but i'm just so causious as i'm breastfeeding DD.
What can happen (not sure that it is what is happening here), is that if you have a happy little colony of both thrush and bacteria then killing one of them allows the other one to breed madly - and can make things worse. So sometimes antifungals can allow the bacteria to go bananas.
Stupid question - but if you do think you have an infection of some sort, are you washing bras and breastpads in hottish water and rinsing them very well? I know that for me it is washing powder residue that gives me nipple-eczema, so I only put a quarter of the recommended amount in to the wash.....
The interesting thing is that, while most mothers worry about the effect of medication on their baby when they are breastfeeding, there are in fact very few medications you can't use when you are feeding. I had thought that the dermatologiist would be able to give you something for the eczema and the possible infection. Importantly, you need to get yourself better so you can go on to breastfeed your little one for a long time
i just wanted to second the kenacomb suggestion. it completely cleared up my dodgy nipple when nothing else worked. i had mastitis 5 x on the one side and the kenacomb fixed in a week and it never came back. not the same problem as you are having, i know, but maybe worth a try?
Kmn what you say makes sense and it could very well be possible. This irritaion around the bb area is so stubborn and it can seem like its improving and then flare up again. I feel that i did get a bit of thrush at one stage and i applied the cream to the nipple area and wonder if that then encouraged my last flare up!?!? I am washing bras and singlets regulary but in cold water, maybe i should try hot?! I've never had a sensitiveness to washing powders but maybe with the weakness of the area at the moment i am more likely to!?! So much to think about...
Barb the dermatologist looked at the rash and said yep eczema, he didn't take any notice of the infection as he watched me peal the bra away from my bb Maybe i should have asked more questions but you pay good money to see these people and you'd expect them to do their job thoroughly.
Ginger thanks, glad it helped you with Mastitis 5x OUCH!!
Thankfuly throughout all of this DD has fed so well (wakes for her night feeds more than i'd prefer ) but i'm just so glad that the feeding has not been effected by this.
So i'm assuming i get this cream from the Chemist ladies? I think i may give it a go.
Oh ok then... Back to the Dr's again I'll write it down and if i'm back there again then i might as about it. Good to know it's out there though. Thank you so much
Just another update for you ladies... (incase you were wondering )
I've been back to the dermatologist again as the itch and the rash were coming back as soon as i stopped the soaking in the bath. And the bb area was not getting better at all. He said oral antibiotics often don't work for skin infections (which they didn't) so i had to try Burrow's solution. The Burrow's solution has had an effect but i have run out of the cream i was supposed to apply after that and it seams to have flared up once again. I'm now going to have to call and see the i can get another script without having to pay for another $100 appt. Not too confident of my chances....
Aswell as that i've been to see a natropath. She is confident that it probably isn't eczema and that it's my body trying to rid me of something and it's shown up on my skin in the form of an itchy rash. I've been taking some pro-biotics from her and they seem to have worked and i'm feeling better in myself. It hasn't gotten rid of the bb irritation though.
So things are still ongoing but i do hope we are starting to get to the end of it
