preparing to BF #2 - Advent Niplette - HELP PLEASE
Hi all - i am preparing to try and Bf my second bub due eaarly august. I had a horror (like so many other stories i have read in this forum) I have pretty flat nipples. I purchased the Niplette a few weeks ago.
I have definitely noticed a huge reduction in the pain felt when using it. initially it was the same i felt when BF my first son. Now after three weeks i can put it on and only feel pain for a second and then it stops. It used to continue the whole time it was on.
Two main questions i hope someone can help with -
1) I am 28 weeks next week and thus it says i need to stop using. Any one know why (think due to the nipple stimulation?) and has anyone used it after this time?
2) I just watched the 'perfect latch' video and even after having the niplette on when i grasp my breast like instructed my nipples retract and there seems like there would be nothing for the baby to latch on.
Am i fooling myself??? I really want to BF this time but had my hopes up so high last time i was devastated when all didn't work out and i had to FF.
I'm sorry I'm no help with the Niplette as I didn't use one. But I have flat nipples and have breastfed my 3 boys, with my eldest and youngest I used a nipple shield. I found it was a combination of them both having short tongues (my youngest also had a mild tongue tie) and that I don't have large nipples that created the problem. The nipple shields didn't effect my milk supply, the feeds probably took slightly longer than a baby who didn't use a shield and it was a bit of a pain having to put it on but I just got into a rhythm. With my eldest I used the shield until he was about 5 months, then he kept pulling them off, so I tried to latch without and he did no problems. With my 3rd, with experience up my sleeve he stopped using the shield at around 12 weeks.
I breastfed them all to 12 months or a few months over with my eldest.
I know some don't recommend the shields for long term use but I'll be honest with my eldest if I didn't use the shield he would have had to be FF as he just couldn't latch.
The brand of shields I used were Pidgeon, and I know women who use Medela (sp) I didn't like the Avent ones as the nipple on them felt huge.
I've never heard of it.
Have you seen a lactation consultant to talk about your first experience and draw up a plan of attack for this time?
When your baby latches on, it will suck and draw the nipple out. Mine were inverted before I breastfed and DS managed ok (we did have some attachment issues and used a shield for a while, but I' mnot entirely certain what the problem was).
I wonder what support or help you had first time round? Sometimes midwives etc will fob off mothers with problems by telling them their boobs are too big or their nipples too flat or whatever, when sometimes there is some other problem that could be solved with the right advice and help. Obviously I don't actually know how it happened for you, but unfortunately a lot of mothers really don't get good help.
I hope it works out well for you and your new baby
