Do you RENT or OWN your own home?

Rent. We pay $340 a week for a 3brm townhouse which is waaaaay too small but I am iffy about paying $100 a week more for another bedroom

The bank owns our home, and sometimes it feels like they own us too!
We pay $1100 a fortnight, I think the min repayment is $900 a f/n.

We have two houses. Pay about $160 a week but most of that is offset by rent on one of the houses.
Soon we'll have three houses, will pay about $280pw and all of that will be offset by rent on two of the houses.

If we wanted to rent out house #3 it would cost us over $300pw so I think getting it for basically free is a good deal ...

Catch is we're marginal borrowers so we're still scraping up the deposit for the third

We are also 'owned' by the bank. Mortgage payments about $2300 a month, but half of that is being paid by our tenants while we are overseas. That's whe reason we are overseas....to be mortgage free I have never rented....don't want to pay someone elses mortgage (but I'll happily let someone pay some of mine!)

Own, we pay approx $1000 per month on home loan.
BUT - that doesn't include the cost of council rates, sewerage & water + maintenance that you also pay when you're the owner.
When we had tenants in they were paying $280/week so some months we didn't even break even.

Rent $380 pw. Its quite a large house tho. We rent off my dad and pay what he would get with anyone else in it less the agents fees. Although if they need to up the rent anytime soon i think we'll be looking elsewhere!

I don't get garbage collection, My mail gets delivered about 3kms down the road, I live on a dirt road with a really long driveway and we live on dam and rain water.

We rent. Currently $240 a week but we're about to move and can't find anything decent for under $260 a week. I remember when we first went into the rental market 5.5 years ago the average (low end) rent was $150 and we rented a place for $165 a week. Now 5.5 years later all I've seen for that sort of price is 1 room in a share house!

Oh man... I remember when DH & I first moved out, we lived in a couple of houses before we found one we loved. We stayed there for 6 years paying $160/pw for a 3brm with ensuite, huge yard, great area, probably 3-400m from the beach. When we moved out we couldn't believe how rental prices had rocketed! and it's gotten worse & worse since

We are just getting pre-approval for a mortgage, so we currently rent...$550 per week for 3br 2bth. Pretty standard for this area (sadly!), but on the bright side a mortgage isn't scary for us considering our rent will increase again soon!

We rent a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom 3 yr old townhouse for $380. It is actually a free standing house, but because it has 2 smaller villas behind us, and a small, grassed courtyard it is a townhouse.
It is a big home but the bedrooms are rather small for our family. We're looking to move in the coming months and will be paying around $450 a week for something we'd be more comfortable in.

Like Liz, I would have to go back to work in order for us to have a mortgage... so we're quite happy as renters for the time being (unless we win lotto of course!)
