Worried about General instead of Spinal Block

So I'm off to see my anesthetist tomorrow due to the fact in two of the last three surgeries that I have had my heart hasn't played nicely... first was in my last c-section and second was in the second surgery I had after my c-section to clean out the infection I got... they have classed them as "heart blocks" and I'm sooooo worried that tomorrow they are going to say that I'll need to have a general and be put to sleep while they bring my baby into this world rather than a spinal block...


I'm so scared of this decision... I want to be awake when my baby is brought into this world, I want to be able to name him before he leaves the operating room... I was so upset in the last two c-sections when my partner and the baby exited the room while I got stitched up but at least I heard that first cry, I got to name my baby and spend a few minutes with them before they left...

It's almost like if I don't go and meet the anesthetist then maybe the decision won't be made... :-( not happy

Firstly hugs. I know what you must be going through. I required a ga with my cs due to the urgency to get bubs out. It's just another thing I feel I missed

After so many years feeling I was never going to get pg then to have missed the birth

I hope you are able to have a safe delivery and remember you will be together soon. But I also hope that you are able to birth without the ga

thankfully my appointment went okay and the anesthetist has said that they will do the same as my two prior c-sections and do a spinal block, however he is fully expecting that I will get another heart block and the medication they use here is different from the one I received in NZ. He said that they will be watching me a lot closer so that they can try and catch it before it becomes an issue.

Obviously a general will be done if required at the moment but I'm glad it's not the current plan!

I'm glad you can have a spinal. With my DD I had a GA as they couldn't get the spinal in right and like Loula I felt totally robbed. It affected me really badly emotionally. With DS I had a spinal (although it was a bit hairy for a while - the anaesthetist took ages and later told me it was very difficult) and it was a much much more positive experience.

It might be worth arranging for your partner to be able place the baby on the breast while you're still under if you do have to have a GA. That way bubba doesn't miss out of the precious first b-feed while they're so awake just after birth and can get a full load of the flora on your skin.

Thats a great idea. My Ob was going to do that this time if my spinal failed again.
