I think you are right to try and get some fuel into it before trying anything else. The simplest solution is most often the correct one so try not to be anxious, that will not fix anything. If putting fuel in doesn't work then I would suggest asking a neighbour who seems handy with cars to take a look at it, or phone your local garage and ask them for advice. I hope the petrol fixes it though, as that's what it sounds like the problem is.
