If you don't drive at the speed limit why not?

I really don't agree with limiting L-platers to 80ks. They go a maximum of 80 the whole time they're with someone else then bang, they're out on their own and can suddenly go 20ks faster. If you're out in the country and doing a lot of open road, single lane driving you feel a lot of pressure to do at least do 100, because everyone else wants to do 110. Not cool for an inexperienced and maybe un-confident driver.

Not in NSW. Its L's - 80, P1 - 90, P2 - 100. Until you're on your open license at at least 20 (or min 3 years driving), you are not to go over those speeds, & if you do its instant loss of license for 3 months.

Ya know those speed cameras that are permanent. Like on the highways etc...

Its a 100k road, and the drivers BRAKE to get down to 70 to go through those cameras! DRIVES ME INSANE

I tend to go over the limit *hides* we are 12km from town and its 80km/hr most of the way, but I often find myself at 82/83km/hr down the hills

I do the speed limit unless conditions dictate otherwise.

I'm another who slows down if someone tailgates me.

My pet hate at the moment is people that don't slow down for roadworks. It's just plain dangerous! How would they feel if they killed one of those poor workers all because they're in too much of a hurry? It's slower for a reason!

I drive 3-5 under most of the time. I can't afford a ticket so always like to have that little bit of a buffer, shrug.

We dont have fixed speed cameras but we do have one section of highway that is well known by the locals for having a mobile road speed camera in operation, so everyone slows right down until they are over the ridge and can see if the camera is there or not and then they speed up again once they know they're not there.

Too many motorists don't pass safely. Far safer for the cyclist to take the lane.

I say the same about caravans though.

I think she is referring to the vehicle registration fee required to use the public roads.

The road is there to share - cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as any other road user which means that if there is room they should get the **** out of the way and if there isn't room the car driver just needs to relax, enjoy the view and play some made air drums on the steering wheel.

My hubby is a cyclist and he has trouble with there being lots of debris like gravel and broken glass at the edge of the road so you have to ride further out to avoid a puncture or coming off your bike. He pays road taxes in the form of vehicle rego as well but rides to work for fitness.

Yeah, 92% of adult cyclists own a car, and therefore also pay this fee. By leaving the car at home, they're causing less damage to the road with their bikes, therefore costing less for maintenance.

So really, if anything, cyclists should pay less tax, not more. And since so many of them do it for fitness, maybe a Medicare levy rebate while we're at it. The costs go up with cycling accidents, of course, but since over 70% of those are caused by motorists, it should even out.

I am a SAHM. I pay NO taxes whatsoever; am I somehow less entitled to use a road because of that??? That is crazy. Paying taxes don't give you a better entitlement to things.

If you own a car, you pay road taxes, ie registration.

I don't own a car. I drive one, but I don't actually own it. My DH 'leases' it through a salary acrifice company.

I am a cyclist and pay registration on a car. I am not even going to Try and explain about how wrong it is to assume that a cyclist can just move out the way....
