    Car Insurance

Hi we have only ever had the 3rd party insurance on our cars as they have seriously not been worth insuring but we have a new car and are looking into
    comprehensive insurance.
Who are you insured with and who wouldn't you insure with? I am not even sure how much full insurance is now as its been awhile since i have has a decent enough car to insure lol
Just after some feedback on the good and the bad please.

Allianz. But we look around each year when we come up for renewal to get a better deal.

We are with Bingle. Online only and very cheap, they are no frills.
I had a car accident a couple of months ago at 10:30am, insured with Bingle. The car was picked up and written off by 1:30pm the same day and money in our bank account two weeks later. I was very happy with them and how quick and easy they handled everthing. They also re-insured me two days later when had a new car and were still the cheapest by far.
They have this service where you hop online, advise you want someone to ring you with click of the button and one minute later my home phone was ringing.

My car is insured with SGIO premiums are great as are the excess options.

DH has an imported car and is with shannons. Unbelievably overpriced when I asked for a quote for my car before switching from QBE to SGIO.

QBEs rates were just too high. Also didn't have free car hire option or window replacements etc and didn't offer free protection on no claim bonus for life. Imho SGIO is brilliant price wise but that's for a 4cylinder awd subaru forester.

    Shop around. Good luck x

We shop around every year. One thing I do recommend is check out productreview (au site) and look for each insurer - there will be reviews on there of the type of service you get, whether they will pay up if you make a claim etc. It was really helpful when we were looking at some of the newer insurers a few years back. It made us realise why some of them are so cheap with their premiums

Before you shop around have a think about what you want/need too. We're happy to pay extra for car hire if our car is off the road because DH needs a car for business but if you can get by for a week or 2 without a car then that's an option you don't need.
Most of the no-frill companies won't pay for replacing things like baby seats if your car is stolen or in an accident.

We have one car with RACV and one with Real Insurance. My car was involved in a minor scuffle with the letterbox, and I was blown away with how easy Real Insurance were to deal with. I had expected 'no frills' but I was blown away by their service and efficiency. I do just over 5,000kms per year, and no one else can come close.

I looked at Iselect for car insurance the other day and found that I'm actually getting a better deal through my current insurer.

Whilst we are on the topic of insurance, does it get cheaper after you turn 25?

AAMI here - have had a couple of no fault claims, including a complete write off and they were great. Very handy to have the extras to replace car seats.

AAMI and I've found them great! I put an awful scrape down the side of our car awhile back. I called them up and made an appt with their service centre. Took the car in, they looked at it and said it will be ready in 3 days, popped DS and I in a taxi (as their expense) which took us to the car hire place (we pay extra for hire car cover). Then when it was ready they organised a taxi to pick us up (at their expense again) from the hire car place and take us back to their service centre. Repair job was great. I have to say I was so impressed. I was with RACV years ago and had to jump through hoops getting quote after quote, then getting them to assess the car, it was a real pain, but with AAMI it was incredibly easy. Definately worth paying a little bit extra for IMO, but when I took out the policy they were by far the cheapest for our car.

Allianz, but I shop around each year and they come as close as possible to matching the cheapest. Their service and claims processing has been fabulous in the past.

It's worth remembering if you are not at fault in an accident and don't have the car hire option on your insurance, you can still get a hire car that will be paid for by the at-fault party's insurance (provided they have it). 1car1 and a couple of similar companies do this in Sydney. I know there are others in Melb and Bris at least.

Check out how you can bring your premium down in other ways too. We just took out insurance for a new car and it was cheaper not to nominate my DP as a driver and select the no drivers under 30 option instead (I think that was the age cut off). We wouldn't have figured that at all, but there you go. You can alter the excess, but in our case it made so little difference to the premium that we left it at a low excess. Choice of our own repairer was an option we wanted too.

Suncorp - they are fabulous and I couldn't say a negative thing about them after the Qld floods - they paid out their claims no questions. Their policies have automatic flood protection (for both car and home) and they are always the most affordable for me....the guy who I rang for a quote originally was so lovely and wanted to chat for ages!

ETA Is suncorp only QLD I wonder???
