WAH Car shopping is doing my head in!

HELP! DH has surprised me and said I can replace my car. I've been longing for a higher car due to my back and am desperate for a car that will comfortably fit two car seats...and where I can comfortably fit a rear facing car seat without having to sit with my knees around my head ala Mr Bean.

I'm not a confident driver so don't want anything too big and have ruled out the Mazda SUV (shame because I have a Mazda3 which I totally LOVE!), Honda, and Holden. Not a fan of the Rav 4.

We looked at the Mitsubishi ASX and Nissan Dualis. I'm concerned about the height of the Nissan as it felt like my head was too close to the roof - 1 speed bump and I'd hit my noggin! At least that's how it felt. And the dealer said he struggled to get his baby's rear facing seat in... I really like the Mitsubishi but DH is worried about the build quality. We really want a long lasting car - we've had the Mazda for 6 years and still going fairly strong (touch wood!).

Now we're considering the Volkswagen Tiguan...

HELP! Does anyone have any of these cars? Tell me about them! Are you tall? How do you find driving it? How did you go with car seats? any issues?

HELP! We want to make a decision this weekend. Apparently the car is going to be my Christmas Present.... DH's is a car cleaning kit

    TIA

If you're looking at the Tiguan why not look at the X3 too.

Talking to someone driving a Dualis last week - she said it was pretty gutless really.....no experience on the VW, I know someone who's just bought the ASX but don't have any feedback yet.

BMW make the X3. I'd also check out the Volvo XC90.

    Have fun!

Was about to post the same thread!!! DH and I are talking about a new car if/when we have a second bub to accommodate a second car seat as our i30 hatch really won't cut it! The Dualis and ASX are on our list too - but your points are really relevant to us and might rule them out. I am the same as you, not so confident and don't want a huge hulk of a car. We are big Hyundai fans (we have matching i30's atm, lol ) so are also pretty keen on the ix35 (definitely diesel!). We love their warranty and 5 star safety rating and neither of our cars have had any issues in the three years (and total of over 200 000 km we've driven them!). I had a quick look the other day and it looks pretty nifty - nice interior, steering wheel controls for radio etc, cruise control, full size spare, good boot space plus Hyundai has really good safety features with airbags/ESP etc, though that was the top of the line model!

The XC90 and XC60 are actually great suggestions if you have a bad back because they have great, adjustable lumbar support.

The X3 is BMW's small SUV.

We bought a Nissan X Trail about 6 months ago and love it. Really comfortable and I hear you on the height thing because it has made a big difference getting DS in and out of the car. We haven't put the rear facing seat in it as yet but there appears to be plenty of room in the back. We also looked at the Tiguan, but thought the X Trail seemed more spacious. We bought the diesel model so it costs the same to run as my little Astra and has lots of get up and go. A friend bought a Subaru Forrester around the same time and loves it, but we didn't end up looking at them so can't comment on those.
Good luck finding what you're after.

I love my Honda CRV but I am short. DH is 5'10" and is a good size for him. It isn't overly large, so if you have a large family I'd avoid it.

I have a Hyundai Santa fe that is FANTASTIC it's nice and high, fits 3 seats across (so im told, only got 1 at the moment but can sit an adult on either side), good on fuel for its size, good price.
Only down side is it has a long nose when parking but you've gotta good view of all yours corners itms

Good luck! Fwiw we just bought dh a Nissan maxima and I have vowed to never EVER to go car shopping again!

DOn't know that it's much help as I'd love a BMW, Volkswagon or Volvo, but I've just bought my third Mitsubishi in a row. It wasn't even on purpose, but I've driven one since I was 20. I've not had an iota of trouble. My SIL has an ASX since we loved out Outlander so much, but no-one sits in the back so her feedback is useless. She is 6' though and DH is 6'2" and there's enough headroom.

Yep I will try and ask them tomorrow when I see them. They've only had it about 3 weeks. The lady driving the dualis (work car) said she was used to driving a Triton (big twin cab ute) so it could have been what she was used to but she said put her foot down taking off from the lights and there was very little response from it!

OOh exciting! I was reading your post and was going to recommend the VW Tiguan and then i read that is what you are looking at.

We narrowed it down to the Golf and the Tiguan, but went with the Golf when we found one ex demo for a good price. I love the Golf, but the seats are quite low and my Mum (who has back problems) finds it hard to get in. The Tiguan is higher and doesn't have this problem. The seats are very comfy & supportive and i love all the extra flashy things it has. We tried out the car seat in the car at the dealers, so take yours and see how they fit.

    Thanks ladies.

Aus girl, that's a common feedback thing with the Nissan from what we have read. thanks for asking your friend about the asx!

Kim, that's good you've not had problems with Mitsubishi! What do you think of the outlander? I think it's a bit big for me to drive

HotI, thank you! We are not sure what to do about the tiguan. DH is looking into it more and we might go test drive one tomorrow.

We have been taking dd's seat and putting in the back of cars but we don't have a rear facing seat to try it with as well.

    Thanks so much ladies!

I also don't like driving big cars. I'd still be in a Ford Fiesta if I didn't have two little ones! But I really LOVE our Nissan Xtrail. Great value for money and you do get a lot of space without a big big car.

DS2 is currently rearward facing in it. And is it fine. He is behind the passenger seat and DS1 is forward facing behind the drivers seat. We like our seat a long way back. I am 175cm and hubby is about 180cm and there is great headroom.

    Yep, buying a car sucks!
