Hi,
A friend of mine and her partner (who are separated) have decided to move back into the one house so they can balance the care of the kids and to make things cheaper but they are not getting back together in a relationship.
Does anyone know how they sort this out with centrelink so the mum doesn't lose her payments (it wont matter if they drop a bit but she still needs something coming in to cover her share of the expenses until she can get work)
I think your friend just needs to go into centrelink and explain the situation. There is provision for recognising seperated under the same roof. The staff at Centrelink will be able to tell her what she needs to do.
there is a form that your friend and her ex-partner will need to complete - its quite in depth and can be a bit personal but its important for her to give as much information as possible so that an assessment can be made. Please make sure she notifies Centrelink as soon as she moves in so that she doesn't get overpaid. HTH
I would like to think that this could be an option for people. It is so expensive to separate homes, rents are through the roof and if you can do something like this for the ultimate benefit of the children it's a terrific idea.
I think it would be quite difficult to get through the separated under one roof assessment and have it approved if a person was being misleading - the assessment is extremely indepth and reviews are conducted regularly by a team of people who specialise in that area. I have seen plenty of enormous debts and prosecutions for couples who are living together and not declaring it though
