    Hey BG

If both partners have tax refunds back when should they expect to see any lump sums and what is it? Have over estimated by 12k

Kudos to Centrelink who have already paid my supps when we only got DH's tax done on Friday night! Will come in very handy this week.

I checked my centrelink thing today, hoping the supplements would come with this fortnight's payment on Friday but it isn't listed yet. We received Andrews tax on the 10th, so I will try to hold off for another week before ringing.

until you've had the notice of assessment four weeks, not much can be done about forcing his information across - if you have notified you are not required to lodge, the reco should be finalised within about four weeks.

If you are experiencing financial hardship you can ring them & talk to them and ask for priority processing.

a lot of updates made online are double checked by processing staff as there is something that flags as being "not quite right" - actual income much different to estimate, arrears payment being generated - any of that stuff has to be manually checked. as you can imagine, there are heaps of these going through daily, and there is a fine line between getting enough staff to check and complete these updates, and keeping those staff on the phones so that the wait times aren't blowing out any further on the phones. i am one of the people finalising online updates at the moment - in an 8 hour day, i get through about 100 updates - each has to be checked, finalised and documented - and if anything seems to be incorrect, it has to be followed up. hence the 4 week-ish turnaround. yes, you can wait on hold for however long the queue is if there is an immediate need for the funds, but keep in mind, it WILL be addressed, in order of receipt, and there are lots of eople on the phones each day at the moment who have a need for claiming payments etc - if you don't need to clog up the phone lines, i wouldn't bother....

As long as I have it by the end of August it will be fine. That is when all the big yearly bills are due

I ended up ringing them this arvo. There was a hold up cause they wanted to know why I had my income down as $6000 and I lodged it as $0 I said I am a down as as teaching assistant (SSO) but wasn't picked up by a school this financial year. He said 'oh okay that is no worries then" and I get our supplements on Wednesday.

Quick question. Why would there be a large discrepancy between the online FAO estimating calculator and what centrelink actually says I am owed with the exact same income details entered. I am talking a 50% difference. While I am slightly miffed because it means I owe them basically my whole tax refund instead of the couple of thousand I was expecting and I will pay it if it is right, I would really like to know why. I will call tomorrow but I would love to know a couple of reasons now instead of stewing on it all evening.

online estimator would be for the current financial year which has different maximum payment amounts, and different income thresholds when compared to last financial year

ok, some possible reasons why your debt may differ - all very generic as i have no idea of your circumstances
    - if you have received an advance at one point through the year, and then paid it back - what you appear to have received (if adding amounts going into your account) may be different to what you actually received (you need to add fortnightly amount plus advance
    - if you have received payment during the year that was used towards paying off a previous debt - what you actually received (amount in the bank) is less than what you were paid (amount in bank PLUS debt repayment amount)
    - if you pay rent and factored this into your estimator but haven't actually provided verification of rent amount to FAO, the estimate may be different to actual
    - money owed can be greatly varied depending on estimates during the year as well - if you estimated a lower amount for several months and then increased your estimate, you would have been overpaid more for that first part of the year - when you then add in the fact you underestimated for the year in total (the only way you could have a debt now), the over estimate would vary for different parts of the year - ftb is calculated on a day by day basis - so debts are the same.

a LOT of people make a mistake when estimating and put in that one of the partners is receiving an income support payment when they're not - it is a tick box on the estimator - and it makes a HUGE difference to the outcome for ftba and rent assistance amounts (i'm in no way saying you have done this, but i'd suggest checking that you haven't, cos i'd have to say at least half of all people who have this question on the phones, when we run the estimator step by step with them, they have done exactly this)

without specifics, which i wouldn't ask you to post online!, it's very hard to say what exactly has happened. i would suggest checking your estimate history online rather than just the most recent estimate, to see if that factors into things, and also double check that you haven't ticked the income support box on the estimator - those two things tend to be the biggest factors in my experience

BG - if DP had several different jobs last year which meant we had to keep changing the estimate, will it take longer to reconcile?

My estimate did change by quite a bit so i stopped receiving family tax support, which might be the cause, but definately have not included rent in the estimate and have not ticked the income support box. I am currently on hold so will let you know the outcome

Update: Got through to a lovely man who explained everything for me. This assessment was for the period I was claiming FTBA and B. I stopped in November because my estimated income was to high. Thiis assessment was based on the fact that my actaul income was $3000 above that estimate, hence a debt. I thought this was the outcome of my lump sum claim I had lodged earlier. The outcome of that should wipe this debt off. Problem is my tax cheque will go on this debt and I still have a 4 week wait to find out about my claim. Hopefully I will get some money back as it is already spent on a new couch!

yup, that makes sense - i didn't realised you'd been cancelled part way through the year!

jellyfish, you could change your estimate daily and reco would take exactly the same amount of time hun

It was such a duh moment but a weight off my mind now. Thankfully I found out the phones are open till 8pm. Must be really busy though, the line was engaged for 10 minutes then a 20 minut wait on hold. Definately won't be calling again unless I have to.
