Well, why not? The home readers take all of about 2 minutes to read with your child and if you can't be bothered taking a couple of minutes out from your busy day to read with your child well what kind of parent are you? Obviously a cr@ppy one. And what haven't you ever thought of reading to your child as part of a bedtime routine or something? Or if not why not do it at another time of the day, just have a sit down and a little read and a talk to your child?! GRRRRRR people like this make me so mad, why do they even bother having kids! Morons.
I think this is unnecessarily harsh. Many people have not grown up with the practice or 'culture' of reading, or with a reading lifestyle. Perhaps some families are dealing with difficulties with particular family members, the rigours of shift work, multiple jobs, chronic disease, or family conflict. I know when you can do it you think it's easy peasy but I for one am happy to confess there have been times over the last few years when I have been under pressure and no, I have not sat down with my DD to listen to her read or to read to her every single night. AND I'm a tertiary educated library-trained early literacy enthusiast.
