*HELP PLEASE* Can anyone please refresh me on the signs of dehydration in a toddler

Yeah i'd have to agree with Schmickers. Unless you've gotten some fluids into her, i'd take her to the hospital. Dehydration isn't something to mess around with, it can be really scary. IF she's not taking stuff oraly she will need a drip and they will put a bag on her (not a catheder.. it just sticks onto her girly bits) to monitor her wee and probably test it too. Hopefully she is MUCH better this morning though!

Thankyou for your messages, a bit of an update overnight.

She had a little bit of water overnight, since 4pm yesterday (we have used the same water bottle to get an idea on how much) we have gotten about 80ml, enough to keep her mouth wet, so just one sip at a time. We tried the hydrolyte blocks and she wouldn't give them a shot, we are defrosting one and putting it in one of her water bottles to see if she will drink some by accident. She had about a teaspoon of oats and yogurt, which she then gagged on and we got to see again :roll: DH event ried a twistie and got excited and sent me a message to say she had eaten, some, but unfortunately by the time I replied that too had returned, so we aren't going to bother with the food.

Her nappy was damp this morning so we know that something is getting through, even if it was 14 hours.. and usually she would have exploded out of the dippy with the amound she usually pees

Would be nice to be able to get meds into her, but can't even get near her with a syringe of any sort, and we are looking at going down the suppositry path...

Hopefully she gets a bit more fluid into her during the day, any suggestions on how much we should aim for, the hyralyte says for her age 1 evey 60min, which is 62.5ml, if we can't get that much into her of either the water or hydralyte should we take her in?

She is very pale and lethargic, but she has managed a few smiles.

I know its not what you want to hear but I'd take her in just to be on the safe side.

Personally hun, I would still be getting her checked out. It's great news that she has had the amount she has had. If she is still really pale and lethargic I would go in. Then you can know for sure it isn't anything more serious and they can arrange an iv or something to help boost the fluid intake. I know you wanted to try and manage it at home (and you have been doing an AWESOME job!!! )
In terms of fluid, I would just go for as much as you can get into her.

Your doing soooo well hun (and your DH too of course) I hope things start improving for your LO soon. It's not nice when they aren't well.

reccomended is 10ml every 10-20 min, so 60-30 mls and hour.

is her urine very concentrated and dark? if so that is a sign of dehydration.

when you open her mouth is her toung pink and moist? if so then she still has enough hydration.

her eyes will also go dry and you can tell this by pulling bottom lid down to expose the inside if moist and pink all ok.

i have been in a simillar situation with my DD, we took her in and they said just get as much in as you can.

have you tried her fav juice watered down maybe? i know you have prob tried everything and feels like your running around in circles..

is she one whjo drinks the bath water? i know my DD would do that put her head to the side and suck her washer etc i know sounds grose but her its fluids and if its clean water with no soap, its ok. it could just be the temp of teh water is soothing i dont know..

I will get DH to check all of those things as he is home with her I have had to come into work to run a training session She doesn't drink juice, we also have been putting her in the bath and DH was trying to get water in there as well, but she is screaming when we pop her in, I guess she she is soo hot that the water must feel cold.

Her urine didn't seem too strong, I will get DH to keep an eye and see if he can get the 30-60ml in per hour, and if we haven't achieved that by lunchtime we will take her in.

I just spoke to DH again and her tongue is pink but has white parts to it as well. she didn't fall for the hydralyte in the water bottle trick either , he gave her a shower as well, as she sometimes drinks the water in the shower, so hopefully she got a bit from that....

I dont know if Ive missed any background, but Im not sure what you mean by not wanting to go to hospital becuase you've been there too many times already? Sorry if I have missed something.

Id be taking her now rather than waiting til lunch time or at least calling them to see what they think. You really dont want to mess around with dehydration.

DD has a bad repiratory history (9 infections last winter/spring), and has had two long stays and 5 other trips to ER last year for monitoring and oxygen, and we have been going every week for physio appointments, so when you have been that many times you aren't so keen to go back, her start to life was almost 2 weeks in as well.

So our preferenace is to try every avenue at home first before taking her in, and we are getting to the end of our options now, we had a few more thing to try this morning and in reality we can't try it all at once as she gets too upset so we have had to pace things a bit.

But in saying that we wouldn't risk her health by keeping her home because we want to when she really needs the attention.

We will give the health number a call and see what they say during the interim.

Beema, love, I'll be honest with you - she needs it now, I suspect. She sounds really sick.

I wouldn't delay getting her into hospital any longer.
