It's only a set backwards if it is to them.
I have a 7yo and a 4yo. 7yo we are still working with and the 4yo is not dry at night at all. He still wears a nappy. For the most part he has no issue. On the nights he does, I just wait until he's asleep.
My 7yo started refusing pullups at the end of last year. It made the whole issue worse. So I gave up on pushing them, and what do you know, that little bit of control for her really helped.
I know you have spoken to health nurses, but have you been to a specialist continence nurse? We saw one and DS2 went from soaked every night to dry 9 times out of 10.
Definitely use dry nites (we used Aldi pull ups, very cheap ) when you are going through this stage though as it makes bedtime (and middle of the night time) easier and more restful for everyone.
Back in the day I used nappies till I was about 8 at night. Never seemed to hold me back, I was dry when I was dry and then they phased out the nappies. It isn't like I would wake up and decide to use the nappy because the toilet was too far, I wouldn't wake up at all! So my body basically just needed to get to the point where I didn't need to and it did lol eventually. It also never seemed like a big deal or anything to me (or my friends, I took them to sleepovers and stuff) and still don't think it is!
