    Gastro in Baby

    Hi,

Phoebe came down with a gastro bug last Tuesday. It started with vomiting after feeding - big lots of vomit. This continued all Tuesday night and Wednesday. She was happy enough still, and drinking. No temps and I wasn;t worried about hydration. We went to the dr on Wednesday afternoon just to have her checked and he said she looked ok and just keep doing what I am doing. That afternoon the other end starts!

This was lots on Thursday with occasional vomiting still and after a crap night I went back to the drs on Friday. He said she doesn't look as well but as she is happy to drink just keep going. He did tell me to stop breastfeeding but re-offer food? I ignored this and kept breastfeeding, cause that just didn't seem right to me.

It is now sunday and she still has diarhea. It is only once or twice a day now - but it is still there. Basically I am wondering if this is normal for a tummy bug. She isn't cranky or distressed. My elder daughter has never had a tummy bug so this is all new to me.

Can anyone offer any ideas? Thanks!

DD got a nasty bout a few months ago and developed a sensitivity to dairy for about 6-8 weeks after. maybe try putting on blander foods for the time being to see if it's residual intestine inflamation? I had to eliminate cheese and yoghurt in dd or they'd go straight through her but i tested it again after a break.

hth hun and I hope your dd feels better soon,

sounds like you have done exactly the right thing with the breastfeeding

Yep like CL both of my DD's developed lactose intolerance after gastro and we reduced their dairy intake and the loose motions reduced. *** TMI warning *** lactose intollerance shows up as 'frothy' poos, so it kind of looks like gastro but it has less liquid in it IYKWIM

we only have lactose free milk in the house now and the girls (and us) are much healthier for it. Normally cheese and yogurt can be reintroduced after a few weeks with no issues. Good luck !

DD can drink normal milk without dramas now but we did have to do lactose free for the intestine detox. I think with my DD it was a reduced ability to digest fattier cow's milk stuff like cheese/yoghurt ITMS. I did reduce her dairy intake. Maybe with the BFing if you consume a lot of dairy that could have an impact too? If in a few days it hasn't cleared then it's probably best to seek a second opinion.

Thanks, I don't think it is a lactose thing though. I haven't eaten dairy in the past few days and she certainly hasn't had any. I have only just started her back on more solids today. The poor chicken has been so hungry and wanting food! I guess I will just hope for the best and try to get in to see my dr if she doesn't improve soon.

I didn't mean don't give her solids. Just avoid trying to give her fattier solids for a few days then reintroduce slowly. Avoid fattier neats and such or try to eliminate all meats in general as well as fattier dairy then creep them back in. It's hard for a tummy to digest the fattiness after a bug Has your DD improved? I'm hoping you get rest tonight!

Thanks CL - I get what you mean She has mainly been having fruit and sanwiches (these prob arent great but she loves them!). She had a semi-normal poo this morning so I am hoping this means she is on the mend!! We still didn't have a great night but we will get there.
