Oh my - it's really a long haul, isn't itI read your first update and was wating for the rest with my heart in my mouth - can't imagine what you're going through right now. I really, really hope that your little guy comes through this all well.
cont.
DS had a great night. He looked good and was actually looking better today (which I call day 5 of the illness) than the previous days. The Dr. came to see us at about 9am. He is a really nice man and he by now knew that I had done my WC research and wasn't afraid to ask questions or offer my opinion and he was not offended by that but rather somewhat amused I think.
The Dr. said pretty much something along these lines "so here's the thing with DS - in my experience I never heard of a child who has presented at six weeks of age with such an early diagnoses. I don't really have anything to base his illness on. One thing that I have noticed is that the anti-biotics have been started very early in the illness and his coldlike symptoms have eased. WC is a bacteria that spreads a toxin into the lung and coat the lungs in mucus and makes it very hard to even an adult to get up. A six week old baby will not be able to get the mucus up. They will try to swallow the mucus, this is why they require so much assistance and why it's such a dangerous disease in babies. I am hoping, because I've never seen this before that your DS has had the anti-biotics so early that the bug will be dead perhaps before the toxins had a chance to take over. Most people present their children six weeks into the illness. Your DS has been present on perhaps day 4"
So what happens from here.....we have been released and are at home. We have a letter from the paed that if we need to go to emergency we show them and DS will be bypassed all paperwork, triage etc and just be admitted immediately. I have seen the social worker at the hospital and she has agreed with the Paed and the head nurse in the childrens ward that I can call and come in at any time for observation or just to be monitored, whenever I am feeling uneasy.
DS is only 6 weeks old...by the time this illness is done with him he will be 3 months old! Basically it's just a waiting game and no-one know what each hour will bring. (Stress).
The Paed also mentioned that my GP was amazing in doing the swab. He actually told the social worker that if I had of presented to him he would have told me that the test was not necessary. That's the 'normal' procedure. He was very glad that my GP did what I asked of him.
I will definately be updating on here just for my own peace of mind as we go through this horrible journey. I just pray and would gratefully accept all other prayers that our DS pulls through this illness.
Thanks for reading and sorry if there are spelling mistakes as I couldn't be bothered to reread what I had written.![]()

Aussie. Just letting you know that I'm thinking of you & C. Mother's intuition is a wonderful thing. I hope this difficult time passes quickly for you & your family.
You are doing a great job hun!!
It's unfortunate that many people who choose against childhood immunizations and their own immunizations for that matter don't see first hand what is the result...... Such as a whopping cough outbreak and how it affects individuals.

The vast majority of whooping cough infections are caused by previously immunised adults who have whooping cough without knowing it and then have prolonged contact with vulnerable babies and children. Comparatively few cases are tramsmitted by unimmunised children. And even among immunised children, 1 in 10 will not develop an immunity from the vaccine.

How is mr C going now, Aussie?
Thinking of you both
I won't go into a debate on here, although I'm well aware of how whopping cough is generally contracted thanks schmickers it was a general comment.

Hi Everyone -
(Please please don't turn my thread into a debate, I just couldn't stand for it to be tainted when I want to come in here and post for my own sanity)
Today is day7 by my way of counting. Cade is still taking his 10 day course of antibiotics which he started taking on Day 3 so he is still contagious for another day but I am telling family and friends that its another 2 days. I figure the 5 day quantine period has a safety net built into it and then I'll add another day onto it at the end just to be safe.
The last 2 nights (since we got home from hosptial) Cade has been showing very little signs of even the cold-like symptoms. The first night home from hospital he had a blocked up nose at around 2am and we gave him saline drops and he went back to sleep with us in our bed and rasied up. He actually sleeps in his bassinet raised up too and this seems to make him comfortable for sleeping. Last night he slept so peacefully until around 6am this morning when he seemed to get a little bit snuffly. We fed him at 7am and didn't give him any saline drops and he has gone happily back to bed.
So far so good. I hope the anti-biotics have hit the cold-like symptoms on the had. He certainly hasn't progressed yet to a runny nose and he hasn't shown any signs of the cough yet either. Waiting, waiting waiting....
Thanks everyone for your positive thoughts and best wishes, I will continue to update.
I'm glad things are going ok. I hope you are looking after yourself and not stressing too much (which I know would be near impossible).
