Mum & I were discussing DD2's speech issues yesterday.
She's getting better, but still having alot of trouble. Mum mentioned toungue tie. Aparrently her brother was toungue tied at birth. I have no idea if it was fixed, or what happened with it.
If it was only slight, do you think it might explain what's going on? How do I tell??
when she pokes her tongue out does it come out alot or only a little? does it have a heart shaped appearance when she does?
a doctor would be able to asses it properly. (you would hope!)
My ds has one and the GP said they wont do anything about it (eg snip) unless and until it causes speech problems when he is older.
Umm, ok, hers & DS's (he had to do it too, lol) did go into a slight heart shape at the end, but only when they sort of changed the shape of their tongue IYKWIM?
& yes their tongues come out...near half way down their chins, lol.
On an intersting note...i have noticed that under my tongue is different to theirs. & mine doesn't go out very far?? I'm going to google pics...
my son had a tongue tie later on in life stretched it out but he also saw a speach pathologist. I asked the dr if his speach delay was due to the tongue tie and the speech pathologist of which they informed me no as he was still fully capable of moving his tongue inside his mouth to be able to make certain sounds his tongue maneuverability was not an issue. he just couldnt stick it out so far.
Even a very mild tounge tie can cause speech issues. I just posted in Sally's thread about this, but my second DD has a mild tounge tie that prevents her from making some sounds properly, especially ones where she has to put her tounge to the roof of her mouth. Definately something to look into and maybe make an appointment for a speech assessment.
