    Wet cough and *wheezing*

My almost 5 month old has a nasty cold with a wet cough- it sounds like there is mucous in her throat. Her nose is super runny but it's clear. We took her to the Dr on Monday and there was no sign of a chest infection. Since then though I noticed I can feel something under her ribs when she breathes and can sometimes hear it. It is not wheezing in the sense that her breathing is laboured but it sounds and feels like the mucousy stuff is sitting there. No temp (she sometimes feels a bit hot but her temp reads as normal, if not slightly lower), she's sleeping well, playing well but she does have cranky bouts a few times a day and is fussy feeding- still feeding 5-6 times in 24 hours though (BF).

Is this still the cold or something more? I know myself that I always suffer colds in this way, with gunk lurking below the surface but I'm not 5 months old.

Bumping this for you. I'd keep my eye on it and get a second opinion, I'd be worried about it becoming a chest infection.

Yeah time for another dr's visit, a cough that long in an infant needs a checking.

Drs always tell me that if they are feeding well, no temp, sleeping and behaving generally normally they are usually fine. However if your mummy instincts say something is wrong, then go to the dr or hospital and don't leave til they investigate.

My little guy sounds like yours runny nose, mucosy cough but generally ok. I'm not stressing cause he's my third and I've had experience with croup and ear infections, but as soon as I'm worried I bug my gp

Yep that's what I'm worried about- the cold evolving onto a chest infection. I'm prone to mild ones myself so I hope she hasn't inherited it.

The doctor told me the same about temps, feeding, breathing etc.

My DD2 very quickly deteriorates in this weather. Last year she had RSV and her lungs collapsed and the year before she developed a bad case of croup. Both times she went off her food, looked pale and was 'droopy'. I keep an eye out for that now and call the health line if its late at night and I can't get in to see the Dr.

Ah the health line- I keep forgetting they are there. Might call them tomorrow.

Croup worries me - the "stridor" breathing and watching for the little triangle at the base of the throat to be sucked in / belly go out is a sign of breathing distress.

As always, if you're wondering if you should see a doctor, I would. Couple of times I've done this with my kids (and DH has wondered why) and they've needed help.

Croup is an infection and their cough sounds like a seal barking. Its horrible and wakes them up.

croup is caused by the common cold virus, it just affects some kids differently

We took her to PMH today to get her checked out and she's fine. Good breathing, clear airways, good saturation. Her throat is slightly inflamed but not enough for antibiotics.
