wohb - loveybums/bbb wool
kitten- thats quite a stash, u should b set for winter. aio take awhile to dry so if u're worried u dont hav enough have some prefold or extra inserts so u can use ur pockets if u r ever on the low side of things
kat- would u consider GK for nanny goat? they dont come with inserts bt u can always make them?? would dry quicker then magicalls. Plus magicall tends to smell a lil cos of the microfibre so will need to b stripped every so often
bg- ive been told 24-30 wipes should b a good number. plain ole water should be just fine. at home i either wet it under the tap or use a spray bottle when im lazy. when going out, u can either have a separate wipes bag r jst put 2 dry wipes in ur nappies. most parents room hav taps, but bring a bottle of water jst in case.
gigi- looks like im gonna start saving some money for our lil trip to adel. just hope we hav time to drop by the shop thou :) im gettin excited now haha
for those that sew- hav u ever used PUL film? im thinkin of gettin some to try instead of a hidden pul layer, so want to know whether its fiddly to use or not. TIA
for those that can wait, GDUNH is jst round the corner!!
Do you still need a LS if you use flushable liners?
MrsAussie - whenever you post a question about MCN, anywhwere, you're going to get a range of responses, and often contradictory.
for e.g, new people often ask "tell me the best nappy to buy", hoping there will be a silver bullet, they will just buy X of those, and it's all over.
but the truth is, different things suit different families, different napipes suit different babies
There are not many truely awful MCN products, most are good, for different people, at different times. that's why i like having a mix of products.
The little squirt is no different. it suits some people, other people have developed their own strategies for dealing with poo, and if it works for them, yeh for that. if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Some of us are more paranoid and anal than others (me!!), in my case i'm sure it's a combo of
- only one child
- five years to conceive, will be my only child
- lots of hospy time for me prebaby so i'm paranoid about health
- the loo where i live, is located close to the nursery (convenience)
- the loo is also close to the laundry (convenience)
- there is room in the loo room FOR a nappy bucket
- it was my choice to buy it (2nd hand)
- we are not on tank water
- there are no other older kids to play with the LS when i'm not looking!
- DH likes gadgets
- DH was more interested in dealing with poo nappies WITH the LS (and i was keen to get anything that got him involved more).
- i've had a child who has taken longer to do firm shaped poos than others. So even with flushable liners (which i have found very useful), we have enough "overflows" for the LS to be very useful to us. For bubs that do firm shaped poos very early, and consistently, i think the LS would be less needed.
So everyone who answers your question, answers with regard to their own personal circumstances, needs, household environs, baby's pooing style (i had a very freq but tiny amounts, pooper as a nb), their access to water, people living in the bush on tank water, might regard the LS differently, and it's just as valid for anyone to spend their money how they see fit, if they would rather spend that money on something else, that's their right.
there are endless reasons why the little squirt suits one person, but not another.
there is no right or wrong answer, just personal choice and personal circumstance.
BRIGSY -
we use the 20 x 20 wipes for wee changes
the bigger facewasher size for poo changes.
i'm just amazed how before i would use HEAPS of baby wipes for a poopy nappy, and with ONE or TWO facewashers, i can capture so much more poop - AND none gets on my hands, cos facewasher is bigger size, than baby wipes. Also, now i now what is IN most supermarket baby wipes, i can not put those on my child's skin (propylene glycol).
we just use water here.
my midwife told me, for the first year especially, keep it simple as.
water to bathe them, water to wash their hair, water water water. it's all they need.
i found this hard to believe, but tried it, and it's been fine.
baby skin is very thin and much more sensitive than adult skin. It amazed me how many products in the baby aisle SAY "sensitive for newborns" etc, but when you read the ingredient list, they have fragrance, colour, propylene glycol (also in antifreeze for cars!!!) and other nasties. so i no longer trust those famous brands that are found in hospitals.
we use Nature Baby care wipes for going out, only if it's a poo change. that's the only supermarket brand i can find near me, that is free of the things the famous brand ones, contain.
i just realised, you asked about wipes for SENSITIVE skin.
ok, buy ones made from organic cotton, bamboo terry, hemp terry.
if being sensitive skin is the main criteria, that's what i would go for.
sustainable hemp products is a good place to ask about sensitive skin issues too.
(they also are the only place i see, that sells NEWBORN sized boosters, very useful).
I am so thrilled for you, after the long journey you've been on.
i was 40 mins away from a IRL mcn shop with my nb, and within the first week of bilby arriving, i DESPERATELY needed to buy nb sized covers with leg gussets and more cloth breastpads. It took a week of me being poo-ed on CONSTANTLY, for me to realise, the small covers i bought during NESTING (thinking i was being money-wise), were too big, and that the leg gape meant LEAKS every damm time she pooed or weedled, and she did that ALOT!!!
It was revolting to be in the car after my c-section, i felt EVERY bump in the road, was hunched over the whole ride there and back. I was not thinking straight, i should have just ordered them online. EaSier for postie to bring them to you, when you have a nb i reckon. But i guess if you are feeling fine physically, maybe it would be ok. The kind of thing you just never know, until that time.
Kitt3n - did you buy the LOVEYBUMS pullup wool cover as a night cover? is it a bigger size to go over a night nappy?
LEA - monkey trainers? trainers made using fabric that has monkeys on it.
wotbb: tiger or zebra striped small berryplush trainer. i can't tell the tiger and zebra animal print apart! i think i'm "challenged" by animal print LOL.
Gigi, wouldnt tiger be gold/black and zebra black/white? Even if they are the same pattern?
You have just convinced me I need NB cover with gussets. Where to buy?
shell - a lot of tiger print is for white tigers! so it looks much the same as the zebra print - i reckon they're the same - just depends on who is looking and what they personally like!
HI girls
Well it has been a busy couple of weeks for me as some as you know.
I have pretty much sold all my AIO/A12 (bar about 5) :(
I have been using bbh for home, IB for Daycare and DH has his huge stash of sposies.
Part time MCN is not too bad. I think i would struggle coping with the emotional aspect of going to full time sposies.. i get sad everytime i hand over $$$ at the supermarket and throw one in the bin.
Otherwise, I have DD home from DC as she has had temps in 39's the past 36 hours so i am keeping an eye on her.
My BF journey is also slowly coming to an end i feel with DS. I am expressing and BF - just taking each day as it comes
Hope everyone is well and will pop back in again soon when things have calmed down a bit
I am still working out the best way to use the LS coz Em has sticky poos!!
BG, I sewed my own wipes with terry towelling and flannelette. They are pure cotton but I doubt they would be organic. I have about as many nappies as wipes because we use 1 or 2 for each change. I have them in a tupperware container with enough water to make them damp but not too wet. I have the foamy wipes wash in my nappy bag and I use that when we are out.
Lea - The colour I ordered will work for both sexes ;) I can always put a pink singlet with a blue nappy if it is another girl ;) 2 more days till I can hopefully buy gender specific!!
I suppose I should do a nappy load. I am not going to disturb the cat until Sarah goes down for her nap.
My new phone should be at the shop today hopefully!! I want it by the end of the week at the latest!! Not that that is nappy related
WOEB: BP.
oh you girls and your chit chattering
BG - i can make you some super soft organic bamboo velour cloths hon..jsut let me know :)
glad everyone is pleased with their fluffy mail ;)...Kitten...your liners should be to you tomorrow :)
hello all...super clingy 1yo bbl
womb - camo hb
Forgot to say Kat - got the newborn covers, thanks heaps hun :) Jett was so stoked that River will have a 'chocolate' nappy like he does (he loves the brown Itti's we have lol)
Maz - i know your bubba's have sensitive skin too, so if you think that's what i need, send me an invoice and i'll trust your judgement! bit like the BP's really
hmmm, anyone think i trust Maz maybe a little tooooo much?? she could SOOOOOOOO take me for a ride! lol
gigi - yep i got a large. i figure if its too big i can always go back and get a medium for day. did you see my stash? i am still mthinking of adding the cute tooshies, do you think i will need them? and do they stay as gorgeously soft? i am assuming they just fit lower and lower on their bellies as they grow?
eta - bg - maz could take us all for a ride - but she would never have to!
BG - ROFL..hehe I doubt it very much, you are in safe hands :)
But you know that!
i trust that she wouldn't - but the thought was rather amusing! lol
 Its part of my evil plot to take over the world ahahahahahahahahah
just let my finish something's here and I'll get onto them ;)
Have to say..i must be lazy...I have a LS and I forget to use the dame thing...I was just use to scrapping pooh all the time
no drama babe! whenever - i has a couple of months - if i know what is coming, i can still buy around it kwim?
G'day beautifuls!!!
I've been such a busy beaver.. hardly get to post anymore...
Anyhoo..
PP - you ok mate? I can get on facebook if you want to chat? (DD is sleeping and hopefully DS is doing the same!!)
Nappy related... uh.... nope got nuthin... maybe later ;)
WOTB: Both in ittis
where could one buy sherpa from?
ETA: fabric that is. Hmm well maybe nappies too, I've only seen v.baby that have sherpa, are there others?
Mel with nothin nappy related to say - damn girl - you must be sick!!! (or super tired cos your kidlets are!)
yeah Mel im good. :)
just thought i would post to let everyone i am still around ...
five hours is a HUGE amount here too - between bladder and hubby coming and going at odd hours, i get nothing in the way of real sleep!
RayRay - the sherpa seems to be a bit harder to source - have recently seen that NappiesCovered got some more in. Maybe FJ will know of somewhere too.
SHellsbells:
here are some brands that make nb covers with leg gussets:
- bambino mio (at ecobabe)
- imse vimse (at nurture nappies and newagenappies) two sort, cotton velour stripes and soft PUL prints e.g zoo and jungle
- thirsties
- bummibrites (at the weewuns amongst many others)
- motherease (the rikki, NOT the airflow)
- some of the tots bots covers, but not all
- bummi polar covers
BG - oh of course, bamboo velour! that would make the Best wipes! soooo soft. If Mazzie "gets" you with anything, it will be "with kindness"!!!
and Kitten, was it you who asked do the Cute Tooshies Bamboo delights stay soft? i think they do, but i dry the mcn indoors and give it 3 mins tumble dry. and use a very gentle front loader. sometimes, the conditions the nappies go thru, have an impact on how they end up. Follow manufacturer's care instructions and you'll be fine.
wotbb: dorothy knickers, having a nap (i can't believe it myself) on a nappyfree time mat, so when/if she wees, i can just chuck the mat in the washer. She's held on since 9am! it's now nearly 2pm. surely she has to do something soon!
Yes, the Very Rare WHite Tiger Minky tricked me for the last several months, thinking i had a ZEBRA print ha ha!
You? Lazy?
nah
just a bit distracted i think! (understatement of the century) with all that you fit into your life! i think just having four kids in itself, is enough excuse to be super busy!
oh yeah, do any of you Vic girls live in driving distance of Bendigo? i'm thinking it's north of melb by two hours? (unsure).
teruteru - I was the same as you in regards to the LS, but DH has just finished installing his homemade one, and it is so much easier!!! I can't believe how much easier it is to rinse nappies! You wont regret getting one!
Rhyb - dont know exactly how he did it, but my DH got all the stuff from bunnings for me... think it ended up costing about $30... I can try and get some instructions off him if you like
not much new with us.. DD had her giraffe CT on yesterday for the 1st time and pooed in it before I could take a photo!
WOHB - cow print HH
my ls contraption will be here tomorrow!!! soooooo exciting,,,, then i will have wait for a poo!!! omg i will be a busy girl tomorrow..installing the thing to the dunny.....
i saw on the greenkids site they do have boosters instock... who said they don't have them????
WOJB~ FJ fitted / maz blue boy cover
Kellie - That is the sign of a good nappy ;) I like that the new boosters are wider too ;)
I could not survive on 5 hours sleep right now, Em drains me so fast!!
WOEB: still in bed so unchanged
WOSE: Mommy's Touch AIO
Bendigo is a nice day trip distance Gigi. Not quite 2 hours. What you up to?
BTW seeing as you're the front loader guru any tips on the best way to keep my velour nappies un-flattened? They are kind of looking matted.
Mel WTG on the sleep :D
Kitt3n the dryer makes the cute tushies nice and soft but don't use it on hot because it makes the velour go matted and shrink. Let them dry on the line and finish them off on low or cool. Speaking from personal experience here because I wrecked mine :(
gigi - oh my nappy goodness!!!!!!!!!! Bendigo is like 1 hour 20 mins from me...are you planning atrip this way :)
kat- they didnt hav them when i bought my gks :P now im not needing to get them cos gettin trifolds off PP. also have some bamboo fleece on its way eventually :)
gigi- y do u want to know abt bendigo??
lol u're the opposite direction from bendigo but same distance as me maz, bendigo is about 1 hr 30 from ballarat too, but I know mooroopna well, my in laws are in shep!
thanks for all the feedback!! I really appreciate everyone's detailed replies!!!
I will mark the LS as something to get asap...aong with a stinkybotz change mat I'm planning on getting hehe
Lea - would love to tak advantage of ur special offer atm but after paying OB bill this week its gonna have to wait till mid feb when we get paid again before can buy any more baby stuff!! never mind!!
wish i was in VIC then i would be driving all over the place to meet you all...hehehehe
got to hang some nappies out but honestly cannot be bothered..its too HOT!!!!!
OMG my Gossamer Dreams nappy has arrived (in letter box today) and it is devine!!!!!
also got a card to say sorry they missed me & that there is another parcel at the post office...hmmm BUT it is hubbys name?? i am sure it is a nappy (ebay purchase possibly)
for a while, their stocks were down, then maybe two weeks ago (??) they announced they had new stocks of boosters back in.
May the "Fluff" be with you tomorrow, when you're installing the LS, obi wan kanobi!
Raven - my MIL has been in a Melb hosp since Dec (one operation booked, that went pearshaped, then another operation two days later), and she's going downhill. Her original stay of a few days, has blown out to two months and counting. She has never met bilby. Her only response to bilby all this time has been "she's very noisy", when bilby is making baby noises in the background (phone conversations). Her other GDD is two months older than bilbs, so i thought she would be used to the amount of noise that babies/toddlers make. I don't know, it would have been nice if she could say SOMETHING positive about bilby just once. We'd send cute photos - her response would be "she's a very big baby, what are you feeding her".
Doctors are hoping to ambulance transfer her to her hometown hospy (BGO), and we are thinking of taking bilby to meet her, cos no-one is sure about her health. Good thing is nobody medical has mentioned pallitative care, but her DD who is there, is worried, that MIL could "go" at any time. So regardless of my r'ship with DP, we are planning to go visit her, so she can see bilby - she may not even register us - her dementia has really cranked up - but at least, we will have tried to make a meeting possible.
so this meeting could be
- in BGO, if the transfer happens and is successful, we would have free accom there, so not rushed, may or may not have a car
- in MELB, if she is not well enough to travel, this would be rushed, cos have to pay for accom.
DH has just had 10 days leave to visit his other DD interstate, so i am sure his work will be thrilled when he asks for "special leave" to go see his mum.
and i could not come to Vic without telling you lot! I must sound like a cold fish, but i tried to get to know MIL years ago, she really let me know she didn't need another DIL (she really liked dp's 2nd wife), and really, she's a stranger to me (who said very judgemental stuff to me the whole, short time i spent with her - i think my fault was that i was not Wife#2). Of course i am sad for DP and his sister and SD, all of whom have a r'ship with MIL. I don't like to think of MIL suffering, what she is goign thru sounds awful.
Raven - if you want to edit all that out, cos it's not MCN related, feel free. I put it here cos there are so many Vic girls on this thread, i don't really understand where you all live (in relation to BGO), but i guess i live in hope (seeings i didn't make it to your last Vic meetup, which i had my heart set on).
i am already planning i'll have MCN on bilby for this trip, and when she meets her Gran for the first time. And she'll get to meet her little cousin, aunt and uncle too. This is huge, considering our entire relations here, consists of one person.
wotbb: about to peek into the back area of the unit, to see how far bilby's business has travelled - she moves alot in her sleep.
Gigi - i live about 2 hours out the other side of melbourne, so about 4 hours from Bendigo - but if your MIL is in Melb when you come down, let us know and if there is a meet up arranged i'll do my best to get down there - Bendigo is just a little tooooooooooo far!
thanks Gigi..i am sure the "fluff" will be with me tomorrow..hehehehe
I got my GD nappy BUT no care instructions....Must email to find out if there are any special care intructions...DON'T want to ruin this nappy :p
OMG you girls can talk. I'll have to catch up properly later. I think I read up to midday and really have things to do now so I will read the rest when the kids are in bed tonight.'
Went to see Janie at The Wee Wuns. I wasn't going to buy much but OMG those Blueberrys are divine. I bought 3 and a Blueberry wetbag. Don't tell DH!!!! I'll blame Viv she wanted me to buy them all. Will try and take a photo of the better part of my stash to share with you all if you're interested.
Question about BBH wool covers. I got one today from BBH via Lea :) ... Do I need to lanolise it? If so, how and where do I buy it???
